    Vinous (90-92)

(this site features barely a foot of dark soil over limestone and rock; entirely destemmed): Dark red-ruby. Fresh, subtle aromas of smoky black cherry, spices and sexy earth tones. A supple, juicy midweight, with nicely focused berry and cherry fruit flavors accented by spices. Ripe tannins spread out to dust the palate on the firm but sweet back end. These vines escaped the frost in 2016.

(all destemmed): Medium red. Complex if reticent aromas of redcurrant, minerals, smoked meat and pepper. Sweet on entry, then quite firm in the middle, showing hints of candied fruit. The chewy, firm but ripe tannins really clamp down on the finish today. A distinctly intellectual calcaire style of wine.

A mix of fruit from Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, now with Hautes-Côtes fruit to impart freshness, the 2020 Bourgogne Grand Chaillots has a slightly earthy, ash-tinged bouquet that takes time to unfold. A blend of five different parcels, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village shows a bit of reduction on the nose. It eventually opens, offering bright red berry fruit with light stemmy notes from the 40% whole clusters. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, not complex but focused, showing good grip toward the bright, expressive wild strawberry and raspberry finish. Probably early-drinking but well worth seeking out.

Bright ruby-red. Black raspberry, licorice and dark chocolate on the slightly reduced nose, with a spicy quality emerging with air. Wonderfully plush, concentrated and velvety, conveying a spherical impression of volume that has something in common with the Saint-Georges. The black cherry flavor is complicated by hints of earth and flowers and enlivened by saline minerality. This edge-free wine maintains its freshness on the back end, finishing with fine, dusty, building tannins and lovely perfume. At this point in our tasting, Liger-Belair noted that in some vineyards in 2016, he lost 40% of his grapes to frost and another 20% to galloping mildew, noting that he was late on one vineyard treatment and spent the following weeks in reaction mode.

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru contains 40% whole cluster from the oldest parts of the vineyard, the younger vines de-stemmed. Apparently it struggled to complete its alcoholic fermentation and had to be transferred back into barrel, where it finally finished in June 2019. It has an intriguing bouquet with brown spices and black pepper infusing the vibrant red fruit that leaps from the nose. The palate is well balanced with fine, saturated tannins. The whole bunch is very well assimilated and lends complexity and precision on the finish. Superb.

Matured in 60% new oak, it has a refined bouquet of pure black cherries, black currant, briar and crushed granite aromas, almost chalky in style. The palate is medium-bodied with immediate mineralité that alerts the senses. This is not a subtle Les Saint-Georges; it races out of the blocks with vivacious, almost flint-infused dark berry fruit and touches of bergamot and chai tea toward the sustained finish. Excellent.

The palate is beautifully balanced with seamless tannin, superb acidity, the new oak present but seamless integrated with a satin-like finish that you might conflate with a wine from Vosne-Romanée. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru includes 40% whole cluster fruit, the most that Thibaut has used thus far. Excellent.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a superb bouquet of brambly red fruit, quite ferrous in style, displaying hints of dried blood and meat juices. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite firm in the mouth and very saline, though it is closed on the finish. Nevertheless, this has great potential.

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)

Good deep red. Pungent aromas of dark berries, crushed rock and exotic spices. Dense, tactile and sappy, with the energy to leaven its almost liqueur-like texture. As chewy as a solid, yet the extremely long finish displays outstanding peppery lift and perfume. Liger-Belair suggests drinking this one in 2030!

    Vinous (95)

The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru has a very intense bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, crushed rose petals, baking powder and black truffle aromas; this is very complex. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, the 40% whole cluster lending tension and pepperiness, and grippy on the broody, slightly austere finish. This will need several years in bottle. Maybe a bit saturnine at the moment, but it will find more luminosity with bottle age.
