Roagna
About Roagna
Luca Roagna farms 12 hectares in Piemonte, made up of many different plots based in Castiglione Falletto in Barolo, plus plots in Barbaresco and the Langhe hills. He works the limestone soils organically (but is uncertified) and allows grass to grow between the rows, practising a no-till regime. The wines are made traditionally, with a natural ferment, a long maceration and a long elevage with modest levels of sulfur dioxide. The elevage is in large barrels of 2000–5000 litres, with the last part of ageing taking place in really old barriques.

The 2015 Barbaresco Pajè is the most nuanced and complete of the four wines in this lower tier of vineyard designates. Deceptively light in body, the 2015 possesses striking complexity and dimensions. Breadth and power are implied more than overtly stated. Clean, minerally notes punctuate the finish. The Pajè packs a serious punch. It will be even better in another few years' time. This is just classic Roagna and the wine in this range that offers the best value. I loved it.Inc. TAX€1,642.21 -

Structured but also loaded with finesse, this opens with earthy aromas of truffle, blue wildflowers, new leather and ripe dark-skinned berries. Juicy and delicious, the full-bodied palate doles out succulent Morello cherry, crushed raspberry and licorice before closing on a hint of tobacco. Noble tannins and fresh acidity provide the firm framework and balance. Give it plenty of time to fully develop.Inc. TAX€1,276.21 -

A new wine, the 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Crichët Pajè is a tiny selection that spends an additional decade in cement and steel prior to being bottled. Wild and exotic, the 2004 is at once mature and yet so young. The closest analogy I can give is an older Champagne that has recently been disgorged. Dark red fruit, tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and pressed rose petals all lend tons of complexity. I can't say I have ever tasted anything quite like this.Inc. TAX€6,999.73 -

A rich, heady wine, the 2010 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti is arguably the most complex and nuanced of Luca Roagna's 2010 Barbarescos, as the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is magnificent. Deep, pliant and beautifully structured in the glass, the 2010 impresses with its superb harmony. Sweet red stone fruits, chalk, iron, mint and wild flowers are laced into the incisive, tannic finish. This super-classic, old-vine Nebbiolo is the epitome of the 'iron fist in a velvet glove' that is often invoked to describe Barolo and Barbaresco. Patience is key.Inc. TAX€4,126.38 -

Blue flower, tobacco, camphor and ripe berry are just some of the aromas you'll find on the stunning red. Firmly structured and still youthfully austere, the compelling palate features ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint alongside noble tannins. Bright acidity keeps it well-balanced and lends a seriously ageworthy structure.Inc. TAX€3,416.66 -

The 2017 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is fascinating to taste next to the straight Pajè. The old vines bottling shows more depth and muscle, along with a distinctly savory imprint that is quite beguiling. Sweet dried cherry, spice, crushed flowers, mint and incense infuse the 2017 with notable depth. The tannins are a bit unyielding today, so a few years of cellaring at a minimum seem warranted.Inc.
