Domaine Rene Rostaing
About Domaine Rene Rostaing
Beginning with two half acre plots in Cote Blonde and Cote Brune, Rostaing hit a breakthrough in 1990 with an inheritance of old vines. His aim is to produce wines unique to the region and the recent vintages not only age well but sacrifice nothing when opened early.

Vinous (98)
Dark purple color. Hugely perfumed, mineral-accented black and blue fruit preserve, exotic spice, espresso, olive, smoked meat and incense aromas show superb clarity and pick up hints of mocha and candied licorice with aeration. Sweet, chewy and penetrating in the mouth, offering densely packed boysenberry, cherry liqueur, fruitcake, bacon and espresso flavors and a touch of salty olive paste. Shows outstanding energy on the strikingly long finish, which features youthfully gripping tannins and resonating floral, blue fruit and smoky mineral qualities. Made with whole clusters.Inc. TAX€2,960.87 -
(12x75cl) 1996Vinous (89+)
Medium-deep red. Less forthcoming but nuanced aromas of leather, pepper, black raspberry and brown spices. Fat but unforthcoming in the mouth; more closed than Rostaing's '96 Viaillère. The pepper and leather flavors are complicated by notes of licorice and fresh blood. Strong acidity. This may well merit a 90-point score with three of four years of additional bottle aging.Inc. TAX€2,113.46 -
Vinous (91+)
Good deep red. Reticent nose offers roasted raspberry, brown spices, woodsmoke, pepper and tapenade. Powerful and rather closed; much less approachable today than the basic bottling, showing more oak and a strong acid spine. Pure and linear. Best today on the long, subtle, perfumed aftertaste. This needs at least five years in the cellar.Inc. TAX€1,885.46 -
Vinous (92)
Medium red. Intense, spicy red fruit aromas-especially raspberry-complicated by dried flowers and pungent herbs. Silky and suave, with sweet red berry flavors and the lightest hint of mocha. The youthfully taut, fresh finish shows a persistent raspberry tone.Inc. TAX€205.15 -

Vinous - Josh Raynolds (92-95)
Ruby color. Highly expressive bouquet of spicy raspberry, cassis and incense, with a strong violet quality adding complexity. Tightly wound on entry, then fleshes out in the middle palate, offering a sexy array of dark berry liqueur flavors and wonderful sap. Finishes long and sweet, with velvety tannins. This is a great vintage for this vineyard, Rostaing commented.Inc. TAX€1,825.46 -
Vinous - Josh Raynolds (90-93)
Medium red. Initially closed nose blossomed with air to display wild strawberry, pomegranate, pungent herbs and Asian spices. Brisk and sharply focused, with medium-bodied red berry and bitter cherry flavors underscored by anise and firmed by chewy tannins. The tannins build on the finish, which is clean, energetic and long.Inc. TAX€1,533.07 -
Vinous (94)
Bright ruby. Black and blue fruits on the nose and palate, with an array of spice and floral qualities adding dimension. Rich but very lively, with impressive intensity and concentration but no sense of heaviness. Supple tannins add shape to the extremely long finish, which features notes of star anise, candied violet and cracked pepper.Inc. TAX€271.73 -

Getting a big Wow in the notes, the 2012 Cote Rotie la Landonne offers additional richness, concentration and depth, with notes of lots of floral and violet notes intermixed with cassis, cruhsed rock and pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated and with building tannin, it needs 4-5 years in the cellar and will keep for 20-25+.Inc. TAX€256.13 -
(6x150cl) 2013Wine Advocate (95)
About as voluptuous and sexy a la Landonne as I've tasted from Rene, the 2013 Cote Rotie la Landonne excels in the vintage and offers rock star notes of violets, black and blue fruits, olive and pepper. Full-bodied, layered, beautifully concentrated and with ripe tannin, it needs 4-5 years of cellaring and will keep for two decades or more.Inc. TAX€2,119.46 -
(1x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate (99+)
Am I being stingy in only awarding Rostaing's 2015 Cote Rotie la Landonne 99+ points? This is a tremendous wine, showing immense richness and power without any apparent weight. Raspberries flood the palate in waves, accented by various spices in a wine that's intensely tannic yet never hard or astringent. Breathtaking stuff.Inc. TAX€237.84 -
Wine Advocate (97)
Subtle notes of baking spices frame hints of tea, olives and raspberries on the nose of the 2016 Cote Rotie la Landonne. A paragon of elegance, it's medium to full-bodied, but silky from start to lingering finish. It's a wine that's pretty much guaranteed to make even the steeliest curmudgeon smile, as it's so bright, ephemeral and luscious. It's not the rich, ripe wine the 2015 is, but it's suave, complex and long.Inc. TAX€742.08 -
Jeb Dunnuck (95-97+)
A bigger, richer, more brooding wine, the 2017 Côte Rôtie La Landonne boasts stunning (and classic La Landonne) aromas and flavors of black fruits, smoked meat, and scorched earth. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and structured, this is one of the few 2017s that’s going to really demand cellaring.Inc. TAX€1,267.16 -
Wine Advocate (96-98)

It's simultaneously rich, silky and concentrated. Packed with flavor and depth, it looks as if it will be approachable within a couple of years yet be capable of evolving for a couple of decades.Inc.
