Prunotto
Although Prunotto was founded as a co-operative in Piedmont in 1904, it was not until the Marchesi Antinori began to help with exporting Prunotto Barolo and Barbaresco in the 1990s, and later, becane involved in production that their wines took off. The winery has stayed true to its original values using their own vineyards to ensure quality control.

The 2009 Barbaresco Bric Turot is rich, broad and expressive. Dark cherry, tobacco, underbrush, licorice, menthol and savory herbs notes all blossom in a large-scaled Barbaresco with tons of sheer appeal. The Nebbiolo tannins are present, but they are nearly buried by the depth of the fruit.Inc. TAX€629.32 -

(mostly aged in big barrels): Bright medium red. Lovely elegant perfume of raspberry, strawberry, rose petal, brown spices and minerals. Sweet and fine-grained, with an enticing minty medicinal reserve to its red fruit, menthol and floral flavors. Much broader on the back end than the normale, finishing with a fine dusting of tannins and lovely lift and perfume. A very pretty, distinctly calcaire wine that reminded me of Burgundy.Inc. (a hailstorm at the end of May limited the production here to 20 hectoliters per hectare, according to winemaker Gianluca Torrengo): Good deep red. Wild, aromatic nose offers black fruits, sour cherry, licorice, marzipan and spices. Velvety, deep and utterly seamless, but with superb freshness for the year. Impressively primary too. Finishes with firm tannic spine and terrific length. Give this three to five years for the tannins to resolve, suggests Torrengo.Inc. TAX€640.12 -

The 2015 Barolo Bussia is one of the most complete and satisfying wines I have tasted from Prunotto in a very long time. A whole range of expressive, balsamic-infused notes typical of Bussia makes a strong opening statement. Rich and layered on the palate, the Bussia develops nicely in the glass. Air brings out the ripeness of the vintage, with plenty of macerated cherry, spice and floral character. Everything is impeccably balanced in the 2015.Inc. TAX€585.18 -

The 2018 Barolo Bussia is suave, elegant and silky. Crushed. Flowers, spice, mint, cinnamon, sweet red cherry and anise all meld together beautifully in the glass. Light on its feet, with terrific depth, the 2018 has so much going on. Sweet floral top notes lift the finish nicely.Inc. TAX€686.87 -

The 2012 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is an intriguing wine. Whole clusters add an exotic element of perfume to the Nebbiolo fruit in this expressive, highly nuanced Barolo. Orange peel, mint, sage and pine overtones all emerge with time in the glass. Understated and also persistent, the 2012 has quite a bit of personality.Inc. TAX€1,116.78 -

The 2015 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is a wild, eccentric wine. The use of whole clusters lends quite a bit of savory intensity. Sage, tobacco, holiday spicecake, cedar, blood orange and macerated cherry all develop with a bit of aeration. The tannins just need to soften. If they do this could be a very intriguing wine, but slight hints of oxidation make it hard to understand the direction the 2017 is headed in. No matter what, the Colonnello is a pretty exotic Barolo with a lot of character.Inc. TAX€1,144.07 -

The 2016 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is a dark, potent wine. Black cherry, plum, leather, menthol, licorice, lavender and dried herbs all come together in this heady, strapping Barolo. The 2016 packs a pretty huge punch, but it is also elegant and quite distinctive.Inc. TAX€1,048.38 -
