Penfolds
About Penfolds
Established in 1844, Penfolds is Australia's most important winery with a star-studded cast of wines, including Grange, St Henri and Bin 707 Cabernet to name just a few. The wines are famed for their cellaring potential and are derived from vineyards across the Barossa region and South Australia. Penfolds wines quite rightly dominate the auction house, Langton's, Classification of Australian Wines.

Wine Advocate (100)A new addition to the Penfolds lineup, the 2016 Bin 111A Shiraz is a blend of Clare (51%) and Barossa (49%) fruit from vineyards that have previously contributed to Grange. Aged in 100% new French oak, it's a rich, luxuriously textured wine that's packed with ripe fruit and finely textured tannins. Hints of grilled meat and exotic dried spices accent red raspberries and redcurrants in this full-bodied but exceptionally silky and elegant red that meets the high expectations for such a pricey bottling. |

Vinous (96)Glass-staining purple. Heady floral, spicy aromas of black raspberry, cherry-cola and mocha, with notes of licorice and vanilla adding depth. Sappy, palate-coating dark fruit liqueur and floral pastille flavors show an alluring sweetness and seamless texture, gaining weight as well as energy and smokiness with air. Sweet and lively for its sheer mass, with a wallop of sweet oak and blue fruits dominating the wonderfully long, youthfully tannic finish. Not much of this to go around, and it ain't cheap. |

Halliday Wine Companion (97)Full red-purple; concentrated, ripe, cassis and blackberry fruit leaps from the glass, with oak present but trailing behind. The palate is as rich, ripe, succulent and concentrated as the bouquet suggests, redolent with cassis, and long, lingering tannins. |

Halliday Wine Companion (97)Dense red-purple; the typically rich and powerful bouquet has layers of dark berry fruit and integrated and balanced oak. What makes it unusual is the distinct hint of chocolate, which appears again on the silkily powerful palate. Here there is an array of all of the fruit flavours one could possibly expect, but once again that touch of dark Swiss chocolate adding an intriguing note. The oak balance and integration is better than any five-year-old Grange I can remember, the tannins perfectly balanced into the bargain. |

Halliday Wine Companion (98)68/32% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz, from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Robe and the Clare Valley. Parcels matured separately for 22 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads; 1400 cases. Stature, power and might. The framework of cabernet in the presence of 100% new American oak hogsheads projects a 707esque presence, within which a one-third inclusion of shiraz builds dramatic palate depth and intrigue. It is as if all the grandeur of 707, Grange and 389 have been united in one dramatic whole. The result delivers structural endurance, a grand display of monumental fruit and a line and length that hark back to the glory days of Bin 60A and all the subsequent legends of Penfolds cabernet shiraz. Superblend, A-class indeed! |
