Vinous (96)The 2017 Montevertine is rich, creamy and beautifully resonant on the palate. Over the last year it seems to have gained an extra bit of freshness, which is of course such a plus in this very hot, dry vintage. Montevertine is often austere, but the 2017 is unusually open today, not to mention incredibly delicious. There is plenty of tannin beneath all of that vintage 2017 fruit. Even so, opening a bottle young is not a crime by any stretch of the imagination. Black cherry, leather, sweet pipe tobacco, licorice and earthy notes develop with aeration, showing just a glimpse of what is in store for those who can wait. The 2017 is a striking wine in every sense. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding further dimensions that will continue to unfold over the coming years. |

The 2019 Montevertine is made with a careful selection of fruit (with 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino) from across various parcels located at a cool 400 to 550 meters in elevation. Compared to the Le Pergole Torte, which remains more closed and initially shy, the Montevertine currently soars over the senses with delicate berry and wild fruit aromas with mineral, blue flower and candied orange peel. The mouthfeel is extremely fine, but that smoothness leaves a lasting impression. Happily, there are 34,000 bottles on the market. |

James Suckling (96)This is precisely structured with racy tannins that are fine, integrated and well formed. It’s medium-bodied, so long and intense. Classic personality. Cool at the finish because of a cool and late growing season. Give it three or four years to soften, but it’s very impressive now. |
