About Domaine Méo-Camuzet
Domaine Méo-Camuzet is one of Burgundy’s big names. Until 1988 most of the holdings were leased out. Now Jean-Nicolas Méo and Christian Faurois are making some of Cote d’Or’s best wine. Using organic farming on their great plots; they boast four Grand Cru and ten Premier Cru sites in Nuits St George and Vosne-Romanée.
Today, the fortunes of this magical Domaine and its standing as a winemaking entity could not be further removed from this period which, quite shockingly, actually saw a sizable share of its fruit sold to négociants! The proud master of over 2.5 hectares of Grands Crus and 8 of 1er, some of the most hallowed terroir in Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée is owned and its fruit vinified by Méo-Camuzet.
Prior to the arrival of current stewards Jean-Nicholas Méo and Christian Faurois, two of the most monumental Burgundian personalities were fundamental in the history of Méo-Camuzet. The first being its namesake Etienne Camuzet, an important political figure in the early 20th century who, aside from purchasing the bulk of what we know as Domaine Méo-Camuzet holdings today including Château de Clos de Vougeot (later gifted to the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin), made numerous important decisions throughout the region with regards to what parcels could be included in Grand Cru classification.
The second, and quite possibly the single greatest Burgundian winemaker of the 20th century, was Henri Jayer. Specifically invited by the owners of Domaine Méo-Camuzet to tend to their vines since the 1940s due to his already formidable reputation, the masterful vigneron remained a sharecropper of the Domaine’s holdings until 1988 when it moved to vinify its plots itself. Following the transformation of Domaine Méo-Camuzet into an almighty winemaking presence in its own right, Jayer remained a consultant and was utterly instrumental in its ascension to the very pinnacle of Burgundian fine wine.

Mid purple. A softer richer dark fruit bouquet after Feusselottes. There is a spicy, peppery finish here which I didn’t expect, alongside the dark blackberry finish. The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes 1er Cru (a vineyard where Jean-Nicolas Méo controls everything during the growing season) has a fresh, quite minerally bouquet that shows plenty of vigor. The palate is well balanced and quite effervescent, offering supple tannin; a little firmness crops up toward the ferrous finish. Fine.Inc. TAX€995.52 -

These vines were under a fermage agreement with the M o-Camuzet n gociant arm for almost 20 years. Alas, they were taken back in 2021. So, this is the last bottling of this wine. It's a shame, because it is thoroughly charming with the dignified lightness that Chambolle often brings along with heady perfume. The supple lighter weight flavors possess an attractive mouthfeel and evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and impressively long if mildly tangy finish.Inc. The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from five parcels from two different fruit sources. It has a very light bouquet with brambly red fruit and cassis scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a little more sophistication than the aromatics suggest, with a composed and slightly peppery finish. The 2018 Marsannay Village is a cru that Jean-Nicolas Méo told me he is considering returning under the domaine since he is finding it difficult to find good sources. It has a pleasant bouquet of cassis and blueberry fruit, nicely defined and floral in style. The palate is quintessential Marsannay with quite sturdy tannins and plenty of blue fruit, although I would like to see more delineation toward the finish.Inc. TAX€458.05 -

Healthy deep red. Very pure aromas of crushed dark berries, minerals and bitter chocolate. Juicy, tight and penetrating, conveying terrific energy and cut to its flavors of dark berries, licorice and herbs. Quite backward today, even austere, but built to age. Healthy dark red. Pure but reticent aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and violet. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, displaying terrific energy to its sappy flavors of blackberry, licorice and violet. Conveys an impression of strong acidity for the year, which the inclusion of some of the stems no doubt amplifies. Beautifully balanced Nuits-Saint-Georges with a firm tannic spine and lingering salty minerality. I'm not sure I would have identified this wine as a 2015.Inc. TAX€2,809.68 -

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru needed a lot of aeration before it finally graced me with its presence. There is no stem addition in this vintage as there has been in previous years. It has a very well-defined bouquet even though it feels "aloof" at the moment, presenting sous-bois-infused black fruit and traces of iodine. The palate is well balanced with a slightly lactic, licorice-tinged entry. A precocious Les Boudots in the making. There is firm structure, good grip and a countervailing sorbet-like zip on the finish. This has all the components of a very fine Nuits Saint-Georges, but it will require cellaring.Inc. The 1991 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is fully mature on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, undergrowth, and hints of citrus peel and yuzu in the background that lend plenty of vim. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry. More like a 1990 in some ways, but there is fine grip, a little dryness creeping in on the back palate with tobacco notes gathering pace towards the finish. Bright, dark red. Slightly reduced aromas of cherry, iron, red licorice and dried flowers. Sappy and sweet on the palate, and much easier to taste today than the Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes despite its solid underlying structure. Dense, tactile and concentrated, with its raspberry, animal fur, chocolate and saline flavors communicating an impression of strong dry extract. The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers is showing especially well, unwinding in the glass with notes of sweet wild berries, plums, sweet soil tones and smoked meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, penetrating finish.
