Hubert Lignier
About Hubert Lignier
Domaine Hubert Lignier is a historic Morey-Saint-Denis estate. The domaine was founded in 1880 when Jacques Lignier purchased plots of vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the 1960s the domaine was expanded to 8ha. Today the domaine is managed by the father and son partnership of Hubert and Laurent Lignier, who make 24 different wines at all levels of classification. Wine-making here is described by William Kelley (Wine Advocate) as “classical”.
It is fair to say that Domaine Hubert Lignier flies just a little below the radar screen of many more casual Burgundy fans. But to those in the know, their flagship Clos-de-La-Roche Grand Cru is one of Morey-Saint-Denis’s hidden gems. And their other Grand and Premier Cru expressions are surprisingly (for Burgundy) affordable wines.

Wine Advocate (91-93+)Aromas of cherries, sweet wild berries, peonies, blood orange and sweet soil tones introduce the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes, a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine with a textural attack that segues into a layered, vibrant mid-palate and finish. From a small parcel near Bonnes-Mares, this is routinely one of Lignier's finest premier cru bottlings, and the 2018 is no exception. |

Wine Advocate (88-90)Produced from purchased fruit and vinified with one-third whole clusters, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes (négoce) bursts with aromas of raspberries, berries, woodsmoke and sweet soil tones. It's medium to full-bodied, succulent and fine-boned, with a delicate core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the Mazoyères side. It has a very attractive bouquet of black cherries, wild strawberry, cola and touches of brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, the 30% whole bunch lending a subtle earthiness on the midpalate, although I would like a little more substance to show on the finish. Enjoy this over the next 15 years. |

Vinous (97)The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is beguiling and pure on the nose with perfumed red cherries, raspberry and cranberry - blossoming with aeration. The palate is everything that you really wish for in a Clos de la Roche: impressive structure, multi-layered red fruit, mineralité that belies the warmth of the summer and a compelling fresh and sapid finish that urges you back to the glass. What a brilliant wine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru includes one-third whole bunch. It has an intense, detailed bouquet of red currant, touches of iodine and pressed iris aromas gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and beautifully judged acidity. So harmonious and silky in texture that you almost do not notice the persistence on the finish. Wonderful. |

Wine Advocate (90+)Lignier's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées is showing nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, sweet soil tones, licorice, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with a chassis of rich, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity. This will require patience. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru comes from a parcel that suffers very little hydric stress, according to Laurent Lignier. Including 30% whole bunch and matured with 25% new oak, it has a harmonious bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and light sous-bois aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Quite generous, with a lovely mineral-rich finish. Excellent. |
