Henri Boillot

The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.
The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.
Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

(malo not quite finished) Fully ripe aromas of peach and charred oak. Very ripe, fat and full (13.8% alcohol), with a sweet peach flavor. Densely packed and very long. From fruit harvested on October 5.Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2004 (1x300cl) As per photo

Mid lemon yellow. There is a slight reduction to the nose. All the weight appears on the palate with a gorgeously sensual deep white fruit, not heavy at all. White pepper. There is no sign of the reduction on the palate. An exceptional example with more tension at the back, great potential for the long term. Guillaume Boillot has dialled down to 50% new wood here and that is plenty. Tasted: 10/1/2021Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 (1x75cl) As per photos

The holding is right in the middle of Bâtard-Montrachet, with rows all the way up and down. Mid yellow. A weighty punchy bouquet, not quite so fine. Massive on the palate and the fruit takes on a whiter, not over ripe configuration, with excellent thread of acidity. Still an absolute baby but will certainly achieve its grand cru status. Vinous (93-96)
Red-ruby. Knockout nose combines dark berries, violet, bacon fat, smoke and pepper; I was reminded of a t opnotch Cote-Rotie. Lush and sweet but not quite as complex as the Chambertin and Clos de Beze. This offers extraordinary finesse and smoothness for Bonnes-Mares, with perfectly integrated acidity framing the flavors without introducing any edges to the wine. Finishes extremely long and sweet, with a subtle element of smoked meat. Boillot is convinced that this wine will shut down in bottle owing to its tannic mass.Henri Boillot Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl)

Here too the nose is quite restrained with its admirably pure aromas of red cherry, dark currant, spice and earth along with notes of violet and lavender. I very much like the sense of underlying tension to the succulent, indeed even juicy, medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the tautly muscular and firm finish that flashes just a hint of youthful austerity. This isn't quite as complex as the Chambertin but it's close and it may well close the gap over time as this is also very clearly structured for mid to even longer-term keeping.Henri Boillot Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2017 (3x75cl)

Two suppliers covering both terroirs. Ultra-intense imperial purple. There is a seductive first wave of the bouquet which I find each year here and love every time. The 2012 Clos Vougeot is classic Boillot. This is one of the more explosive, dark Clos Vougeots readers will come across. Wild flowers, sweet tobacco and violets lead to a core of dark red/blackish fruit in a Burgundy that pulses with incredible energy and vitality. Wonderfully resonant on the palate, the 2012 captures the essence of site and vintage as expressed through the signature richness of Henri Boillot's deeply personal style. Boillot's 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which hails from the lieu-dit Grand Maupertui (neighboring Anne Gros' parcel), reveals a brooding bouquet of cassis, plum, musk and incense, framed by toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and multidimensional, fresh and vibrant despite its considerable amplitude and power, with a fine-grained chassis of tannin and a long, sapid finish. This is a rich, lavish Clos Vougeot which should develop beautifully in the cellar.Henri Boillot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl) As per photos ,1914425
