Fontaine-Gagnard
About Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard
Fontaine-Gagnard is the true Burgundian love affair. Its story began in the 1980s with the marriage of Richard Fontaine and Laurence Gagnard. Since 2007, Celine Fontaine has been taking more control of the winemaking from her father and the wines have been surging ahead over the past few years.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has seen a stratospheric rise in quality and acclaim over the last decade, excelling in the outstanding 2014 and 2017 vintages. The wines have a fantastic purity and minerality allied to a lovely weight and richness of fruit. This is a very smart and stylish Domaine making some of the most sought-after wines from Chassagne-Montrachet, boasting a fantastic intensity of fruit that beautifully expresses their top-notch terroir.

Vinous (94)The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a rather terse bouquet, more saline than the Criots, touches of oyster shell coming through with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with more weight and density than the Criots, grippy and saline with a long spicy aftertaste. This is excellent - but serious and warranting cellaring for three or four years. |

Vinous (96)The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru conveys more tension and mineralité on the nose than the Criots, very well defined with wet limestone mixed with citrus fruit and apple blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, taut and fresh with a saline finish that has a lovely edginess. With great persistent and poise, this is a very impressive Bâtard-Montrachet. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2012 Criots-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from the family’s one-third hectare holding planted between the 1930s and 1990s. It was picked the same day as the premier crus and Celine told me that it always has a slightly higher degree of alcohol. It has an entrancing bouquet with perfumed apricot, peach and dried citrus peel notes infused with minerals – feminine and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, powerful, spicy opening. It is very well balanced, very concentrated on the finish. This is compelling like so many from this under-rated grand cru vineyard, though there are just four barrels instead of the usual eight in this year. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2013 Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has an intense and mineral bouquet that soars – touches of white peach and apricot blossom gently drifting from the glass, flecks of chalk and even white chocolate. The palate is fresh and vibrant, hints of white peach and brioche, oyster shell and citrus peel on the precise understated finish. This will be irresistible. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, represented by five barrels this year, has a refined and focused bouquet, just a subtle reduction at play here. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, harmonious with a gorgeous smooth texture, gently unfurling with a tender yet concentrated finish. Wonderful. |

Wine Advocate (95)Aromas of clear honey, blanched almonds and pear mingle with hints of citrus blossom and orange oil, introducing the 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, elegantly textural wine that's supple and enveloping, with lovely depth and dimension at the core, underpinned by lively acids. Long and perfumed, this is an elegant, expressive Montrachet from Fontaine-Gagnard. |

Vinous (95)The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru, of which there is one and a half barrels this year (actually the maximum that the domaine produces), has an intense oyster shell and flinty bouquet, touches of hazelnut and white peach developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a very slight reduction on the entry, lively and very concentrated with orange rind and quince towards the finish. The new oak from the half barrel is conspicuous at the moment but that will be integrated with time in bottle. |

Vinous (94)The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru has an intense nose, quite powerful, maybe the oak a little too present at the moment. The palate is powerful too, touches of tropical fruit infusing the citrus fruit, lightly spiced with a slightly heavy finish. Very fine, but it will require time to absorb the new oak. |

Vinous (92-94)There is just one barrel of 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru this year (normally there is one and a half). It has an intense bouquet, though it doesn't quite have the panache of the Bâtard-Montrachet, a hint of menthol emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a dab of stem ginger on the entry, fine depth, powerful and concentrated with an intense finish. |
