Fieuzal
Bought in 2001 by Brenda and Lochlann Quinn, De Fieuzal's Irish owners seem to have struck gold with their winemaker Stephen Carrier who joined in 2007. Under his stewardship, they are 'experiencing a renaissance' and are now 'achieving things no one would have thought possible a decade ago' in the eyes of the Wine Advocate's Yohan Castaing.
The philosophy involves as much looking forward as it does looking back, in so much as they have embraced technological advances in any way possible, building a brand new state-of-the-art cellar, to improve the winemaking process while also returning to more traditional ways in an attempt to improve the quality of their soils and the biodiversity of the estate. The final step in their evolution has been to bring in Thomas Duclot has consultant since the 2019 vintage, the mastermind behind the rise of Canon, Troplong Mondot and Figeac in recent years. They are now doing gentler cooler extraction, less pumping over and using less new oak which is all combining to make a much more precise wines and keeping freshness which the best wines, in particular Canon, have been doing very well. All this hard work has paid off as they are now producing 'some of the most elegant and unique wines of Pessac-Léognan and Bordeaux' according to Castaing.

Wine Advocate (94-96)The 2023 Fieuzal reveals a bright, perfumed bouquet of mulberries and cherries mingled with floral accents of violets, lilac and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, it’s pure and seamless, with a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids and powdery, ultra-refined tannins, concluding with a mineral, penetrating finish. This blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot stands out in this challenging vintage for gravelly, sandy terroirs. Under the adept guidance of Stephen Carrier, the estate positioned on the border of the Pessac-Leognan appellation has hit new heights in recent years. |
