About Domenico Clerico
Clerico rose to become a "giant of Barolo" (Decanter), having started to produce wine in 1979 after taking over his father’s vineyard three years earlier and today this small but historic estate is now managed by winemaker and General Director Oscar Arrivabene. The winery is now one of the most respected names in all Barolo not only for their extremely high-quality wines but also for showcasing exceptional expression of the terroirs of their outstanding vineyard holdings in four of the greatest Crus of Monforte; Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana and Mosconi.

Dark ruby. Clerico's 1999 Pajana is simply an outrageous wine. It explodes out of the glass with an aromatic nose and masses of heady, sumptuous dark fruit, prune, plum and licorice sensations that burst onto the palate in an extraordinary expression of Nebbiolo that leaves me speechless. Pajana represents the lower end of the same site that produces fruit for the Barolo Ciabot Mentin. The soils are a bit looser here and the temperatures are just a few fractions higher at this site. Winemaking for the 2013 Barolo Pajana sees 20 days of skin maceration, and malolactic fermentation in this vintage was done in oak (otherwise that second fermentation occurs in stainless steel). The idea, of course, is to work without oxygen, but if the malolactic fermentations are slow, the wine goes into wood, as is the case here. The wine later ages in barrique for 16 months with another 16 months in botte grande. The bouquet offers delicate layers of mineral and flint with dark fruit and spice neatly folded into its thick texture. Compared to the 2016 vintage that I tasted at the same time, this wine is more robust, structured and deeper. In some cases, I prefer 2016 to 2015, but this is one case in which the warmer vintage ushers forth a special and very attractive level of intensity. The bouquet is layered, multifaceted and fluid. This has remarkably penetrating fruit and terrific grip. Finishes strong and long; the wine's firm tannins will require a good six or seven years of additional bottle aging. The 2011 Barolo Percristina is an attractive wine that has aged quite well over the last decade, which is a major step forward. Succulent dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, menthol, espresso, spice and blood orange flesh out in a supple, juicy Barolo from Clerico. In 2011, Percristina is quite a bit more laid back and less concentrated than in previous years. It is also impeccably balanced and a pure joy to taste today. The 2023 Langhe Dolcetto Visaldi is 20-30% carbonic maceration and is produced in a fresh style, although it also has real structure coming from this area of the region. Aged without oak in stainless steel, it pours a youthful magenta color and boasts a fruity, fresh lift in its notes of peppery spice, mixed berries, and pressed purple flowers. The palate is medium-bodied, snappy, and fresh, with a refreshing spice of acidity, and it has a lovely crisp, ripe feel, with hints of deeper notes.
