Joseph Roty
An augmentation of Domaine Joseph and Philipe Roty, they are not swayed by current trends. They do not sell their wine until it is bottled so they are always a vintage behind the market. Joseph had a cult following amongst Burgundy fans and he has passed his style of rich powerful wines onto his son.

Aromas of ripe cherries and cassis mingled with notions of licorice, anise, sweet spices, dark chocolate and peonies introduce the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes, a full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine that's rich and velvety, with a broad-shouldered, textural profile and a long, resonant finish. Framed by beautifully ripe, powdery tannins, it's an especially sensual rendition of this perennially great wine.Inc. TAX€3,346.38 -

There were only seven barrels of the superb 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes, as the Roty family's ancient vines yielded a mere 18 hectoliters per hectare. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis and plums mingled with licorice, sweet spices, violets and loamy soil, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with huge concentration, velvety tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, resonant finish. This monument in the making will require a decade's patience, and prove essentially immortal thereafter.Inc. TAX€1,939.43 -

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a slightly more opulent nose than the Griottes-Chambertin: blue fruit, violets and fine mineralité tucked underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled but still quite firm tannins, a thick smear of Valrona dark chocolate towards the finish mixed with kirsch. Very typical of Roty's style, it will deserve considerable ageing but you have to stand back and admire its gung-ho attitude in such a difficult vintage.Inc. TAX€4,680.23 -

Bright dark red. Very ripe aromas of plum and redcurrant. Musky and saline in the mouth, with red fruit and menthol flavors coming across as a bit flat. Finishes with light but slightly drying tannins. I wanted more lift and personality.Inc. TAX€881.03 -

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys has a clean, precise bouquet, tightly wound at first but unfolding to reveal raspberry, cranberry and pressed flower. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, and lightly spiced with a touch of white pepper toward the finish.Inc. TAX€1,148.77 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys offers mostly red berry fruit on the nose, which is maybe just a little smudged compared to Roty’s other Village Crus at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry and a fine bead of acidity. The precise, chalky-textured finish compensates for the aromatics. I am sure the nose will gain more clarity during the remainder of élevage.Inc. TAX€1,107.97 -

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys has a perfumed and floral nose - peony and iris flower complementing the black cherry fruit. The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys has a composed, quite elegant bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and autumn leaves, just a faint hint of pine. Medium red. Perfumed, refined aromas of red cherry, rose petal and peppery spices. A juicy, sappy, layered midweight, offering good aromatic lift to the black cherry and licorice flavors. Conveys an impression of breadth without weight and finishes long and spicy. Very fresh and delineated premier cru.Inc. TAX€1,925.82 -
Vinous (93)
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru comes from a single 0.5-hectare parcel. It possesses quite a complex bouquet of violet-infused black fruit and a light marine influence (shucked oyster shells). The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy black cherry and mineral-rich blueberry fruit, fine backbone and a very saline finish. Excellent.Inc. TAX€1,811.26 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru was quite closed and reticent on the nose from barrel, touches of cassis and violet petal eventually unfurling, though it remained broody. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and vibrant. The velvety-textured finish is very caressing. Pure and focused, with a surfeit of energy, this is a superb Premier Cru from Roty.Inc. TAX€1,250.87 -
Vinous (94)
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru is perfumed and floral, with plenty of black cherries, cassis fruit infused by violet and iris flower scents. The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru has quite a sensual nose with black cherries, vanilla pod, blueberry and light pressed violet scents that cohere nicely with aeration. The 2018 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more open bouquet than the Mazis-Chambertin, offering nicely focused blackberry, briar and pencil box aromas and good intensity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and zesty, with fine tannins and blood orange infusing the blue fruit on the persistent finish. Superb, though it needs several years in the cellar.Inc. TAX€3,496.19 -
Vinous (94)
The 2020 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with violet and incense infusing the intense black and blueberry fruit, touches of liquorice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, very well integrated oak, lots of panache here with a sweet spicy, pain d'épices finish. Very long. Not a subtle Griottes but one to cellar down for several years (at least).Inc. TAX€4,208.66 -
Vinous (88-90)
The 2019 Marsannay Blanc has a fragrant bouquet of apple blossom and light pear aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, not overly complex and perhaps not quite as tensile as the previous vintage, but it feels quite tender and long on the finish.Inc. TAX€338.87 -
Vinous (88)
The 2020 Marsannay Blanc has a delightful bouquet with apple blossom and lime flower scents that opens in the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, very harmonious with a touch of spice towards the finish. This will offer several years' drinking fulfilment.Inc. TAX€438.47 -

Good deep red. Wild nose features berry liqueur, game and smoky oak, with a firm stony underpinning. Then surprisingly silky on entry and broad and round in the middle, offering a felicitous combination of volume and power. This shuts back down on the back end, with the wine's minerality becoming more apparent.Inc. TAX€6,470.77 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)
Bright ruby. Reduced aromas of blackberry, game and licorice; strong suggestions of soil. Then wonderfully sweet and creamy in the mouth, with a slightly roasted ripeness of fruit complicated by mocha and flowers. Large-scaled, broad and mouthfilling but without any heaviness. This has fat and muscle, and finishes with huge tannins and compelling lingering sweetness. A superb early showing for this wine.Inc. TAX€9,020.77
