Clos du Marquis
About Clos du Marquis
Clos du Marquis is one of Bordeaux’s oldest second wines, first produced in 1902. It has been part of the Delon family holdings since then, and is produced by the same wine-making team, using the same wine-making techniques, as Léoville-Las Cases. Both Las Cases and Clos du Marquis are vinified in the same facility and are matured in 60% new oak before release.
Though Clos du Marquis is produced by illustrious Saint-Julien property, Leoville Las Cases, it is not exactly a 'Second Wine', nor is it a Grand Vin. It is the product of a specific plot on the edge of the Leoville Las Cases estate, bordering on Pauillac and exhibiting excellent and classic Saint-Julien character. Producing firmly structured, age-worthy wines, Clos du Marquis is a complement to the illustrious Delon stable.

93-95 A really soft wine, its acidity a pure line in the heart of firm, dusty tannins and black plum skin flavors. Very generous feel.Inc. TAX€637.98 -

From the considerable talents of the Léoville Las Cases team, the 2016 Clos du Marquis is made from 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. This full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly elegant Saint Julien has the purity and balance that’s the hallmark of the vintage as well as loads of underlying structure and depth. Great notes of ripe black cherries, blackcurrants, spring flowers, and graphite all emerge from this beauty, which is going to be one for the ages. It will need 8-10 years of cellaring and keep for three decades.Inc. TAX€447.18 -

Pure crème de cassis, tobacco, black cherries, lead pencil, and a wonderful sense of minerality emerge from the 2020 Clos Du Marquis, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, elegant texture, plenty of ripe tannins, and the vibrant, focused, lengthy style of the vintage front and center. It's going to need 4-6 years of bottle age, possibly more, but the balance, purity, and precision are all brilliant. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, raised in 40% new French oak. The technical information checks in with the alcohol at 13.57%, pH of 3.76, and an IPT of 84. This will be a long-lived Saint-Julien!Inc. TAX€393.18 -

I loved the 2022 Clos Du Marquis, which is a brilliant effort, if not the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted. Cassis, graphite, and floral notes all define the bouquet, and it's full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and flawless balance. It shows the ripe, concentrated, powerful style of the vintage yet is incredibly pure and seamless, with everything in the right places. It's going to round into form with just a few years of bottle age but have decades of prime drinking.Inc. TAX€619.67 -

This offers beautiful blackcurrants and blackberries with hints of chocolate and walnuts. Medium- to full-bodied with vivid acidity that adds tension and freshness to the mid-palate. It’s full of life and vibrancy, very fine and polished, and with nicely integrated tannins. Long finish. 56% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 9% cabernet franc. What will be better between 2022 and 2023?Inc. TAX€1,427.93 -
