Chauvin
A small 15ha Saint-Émilion estate whose history dates back to 1852 upon the division of the fiefdom of Corbin, Château Chauvin began its modern life in 2014 when it was bought by the legendary Sylvie Cazes, the co-owner of Domaines Jean-Michel Cazes who also own Château Lynch Bages at Pauillac. Sylvie and her team have created a new direction for the estate, taking it into the future whilst also respecting the past, shown by their label being based off a label from the estate back at 1929. They hold an outstanding terroir, that extends north-west of the town of Saint-Émilion toward Pomerol, halfway between Cheval-Blanc and the Butte de Rol. No stone is left unturned in the the hunt for quality, and they even bring in the world's most famous oenologist Michel Rolland to consult.

From an estate recently purchased by Sylvie Cazes, who is renovating the estate, the 2015 Château Chauvin checks in as a blend of 80% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, from sandy/clay soils, that was brought up in 60% new barrels. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a pure, elegant bouquet of crème de cassis, damp earth, candle wax, and spring flowers. Rich, concentrated, and seamless on the palate, with terrific elegance, it has ripe, present tannin, good acidity, and is going to age beautifully. Tasted twice.Inc. TAX€546.59 -

The 2018 Chauvin is rich and generous in the glass, with plenty of black cherry, espresso, menthol, licorice, chocolate and new oak flavors. Beautifully layered and sumptuous, Chauvin is so expressive today. The 2018 is quite lush, but it has enough energy to keep things in balance. I continue to love the wines from this château. The 2019 Château Chauvin shows an impeccably balanced, elegant, yet still concentrated style that's well worth seeking out. Mostly Merlot (there's some Cabernet Franc as well as a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon), its deep purple hue is followed by a clean, pure, medium to full-bodied wine offering classic ripe darker cherry and currant fruits as well as spicy oak, chalky minerality, and hints of tobacco. It's still closed and reserved today, yet the balance is spot on, it has beautifully ripe tannins, and a great mid-palate. It's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and have at least two decades of prime drinking. It's wonderful stuff.Inc. TAX€456.96 -
