Ruby tending to garnet. Wonderful cocoa and cinnamon on the nose. Entry on the palate is pure and focused, with plum, cherry and clove enveloped by burnished tannins. Warm, generous and poised, this wine displays all the finesse that Castello di Ama is deservedly noted for. Note: starting with the 1999 vintage, all the grapes that had previously been reserved for the estate's single-vineyard Bertinga and San Lorenzo bottlings are now part of the regular Chianti, and it shows.Inc. Bright medium-dark red. Fresh red berries, menthol and woodsy underbrush on the nose, with lively nuances of violet and cured tobacco. Pure, lively and fruit-driven, with nicely delineated flavors of ripe raspberries and mint. This juicy, intense wine boasts attractive sweetness and plenty of sangiovese character. A deft use of oak nicely frames the flavors, and the lingering finish shows an attractive floral character. One of the best Chiantis in '03.Inc. TAX€1,029.58 -
Vinous (89+)
The 2016 Chianti Classico Ama, the estate's entry-level wine, emerges from younger vines within the property. Dark, plum, spice, menthol and licorice flesh out in a forward, supple Chianti Classico built on fruit density and voluptuousness, both of which the wine has in spades. Just bottled, the 2016 needs time to be at its most expressive. A dollop (5%) Merlot rounds out the blend.Inc. TAX€390.78 -

The 2018 Chianti Classico Ama shows just how promising the vintage is. A burst of sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, leather, spice and orange peel give the 2018 a feeling of exuberance that is impossible to miss. The purity of the flavors is just striking. This is such a beautiful wine.Inc. TAX€389.74 -

The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia is fabulous. A heady, opulent wine, the 2018 possesses tremendous energy to match its explosive personality. The plush fruit and soft, silky curves are pure Casuccia. The 2018 needs at least a handful of years in bottle, as it is a wine that only truly blossoms with time.Inc. TAX€1,146.47 -
Vinous (100)
The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia is stunning. What a wine! In this vintage, the aromatics are huge and expansive, a theme that comes through on the palate as well. Cedar, tobacco, dried leaves, incense and blood orange all race out of the glass. The 2019 is mind-blowing in its intensity, pedigree and overall balance. It's the wine of the vintage in Chianti Classico.Inc. TAX€1,456.38 -
Wine Advocate (95)
The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo represents a blend of some of the estate's best Sangiovese from vines that are 20 years old and more. You do feel that extra density, intensity and complexity within the very fiber of this beautiful wine. The effect is deep and layered. Castello di Ama is characterized by limestone clay soils mixed with both galestro and alberese marl stones. There is about 60 centimeters of topsoil and compacted clay below that.Inc. TAX€912.78 -
Wine Advocate (95)
The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is immediately more inky and balsamic in terms of aromas. As soon as you lift the wine to your nose, you get pretty tones of blackberry, cassis, rosemary essence, licorice and a touch of medicinal herb. I love when Sangiovese produces those elegant aromas, and for that reason, this wine stands tall among the three single-vineyard expressions from Marco Pallanti and Castello di Ama. It shows fiber, richness and lasting structure with a very well-managed quality of tannins.Inc. TAX€413.58 -
James Suckling (96)
Cherries, dried flowers and slate on the nose with some fresh mushrooms. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a juicy, chewy finish. Lots of structure and freshness to this. Extremely serious as always. Tight and focused. Try after 2024.Inc. TAX€274.38 -
Vinous (94)
The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo is a deep, potent wine. Black cherry, gravel, smoke, licorice, chocolate, spice infuse the San Lorenzo with tons of dark Sangiovese character. A heady, muscular wine, the 2019 exudes tremendous richness. I would give it a few years. The 2018 is a wine of aromatic intrigue and intensity.Inc. TAX€295.98 -
James Suckling (97)
Perfumed and beautiful with flowers, cherries and raspberries. Forest fruits, too. Full-bodied with extremely fine tannins that run the length of the wine and are wonderfully integrated, spreading across the palate. Lasts for minutes. Better after 2025, but already fantastic.Inc. TAX€586.38 -

A dream Chianti Classico. Harmony in a glass. Glorious aromas of crushed berries, raspberry and mineral. Full-bodied, with superpolished tannins and a long, long finish of ripe fruit. Built for aging, but who can wait? Best after 2002. 680 cases made.Inc. TAX€1,093.98 -
Wine Advocate (98)
The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Bellavista sees fruit sourced from one of Castello di Ama's most beautiful vineyards with a wide exposures and plenty of sunshine. This wine shows profound complexity and a far-reaching bouquet that evolves slowly in the glass. Of these three single-vineyard Gran Selezione wines (Bellavista, La Casuccia and San Lorenzo), the Vigneto Bellavista is the most complete, but it is also the most linear and streamlined in terms of mouthfeel. I would bet on putting this wine aside in your cellar for a longer aging time.Inc. TAX€614.65 -

The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Bellavista marries Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera, a combination that works so well. The Bellavista is a powerful, vertical wine endowed with explosive and tremendous energy. Like all the top wines, it needs the better part of a decade to show all it's got. Gravel, smoke, leather, licorice and scorched earth.Inc. TAX€1,091.58 -

The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Bellavista soars out of the glass with breathtaking intensity in all of its dimensions. The aromatics alone are striking, but that's just the beginning. Rich and sumptuous on the palate, the 2019 is the most refined Bellavista I have ever tasted, and I have tasted them all. A healthy dollop of Malvasia Nera adds savory notes and a good deal of grip, while clean mineral nuances extend the finish. The tannins are especially polished, which they rarely are in a young Bellavista.Inc. TAX€1,372.38 -

The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia is a powerful, explosive wine. Almost unnaturally so. In most vintages, the Casuccia is a sensual, racy wine. Not in 2015. Readers will have to be especially patient. Time in the glass brings out the wine's more floral side and a range of red-toned fruit.Inc. TAX€750.78 -

The 2016 won't be ready to drink anytime soon, but it is unquestionably a great wine in the making.
