The 2021 Barolo Francia is a vertical, explosive Barolo endowed with tons of energy. Bright acids and fine beams of tannin provide the framework for this striking young Barolo. All the elements are so well balanced. Time in the glass brings out an interplay of mineral-drenched energy, persistence and textural breadth. Here is another masterpiece from vintner Martino Manetti (and winemaker Paolo Salvi, following in the footsteps of long-time key figures Giulio Gambelli and Estate Manager Bruno Bini). The Montevertine 2022 Le Pergole Torte is 100% Sangiovese made in a similar winemaking style as the others, although both botte and barrique are used here. It opens to a dark garnet appearance that is velvety and rich yet shiny on the inside with a ruby brightness that is specific to this Tuscan grape. This is an amazing wine, so precise and balanced. I love the boldness of the vintage, and I am delighted by how elegantly it unfolds over the palate. The wine is contoured and pretty in terms of texture, and yet there are mineral notes that add freshness and vertical lift. This portfolio offers good scale with three wines, an entry-level, middle-level and top-end wine, each offering a distinct identity. Production is 30,000 bottles. This is broad and powerful, complex and muscular with flesh and chew. Tannins are grippy but they're joined by mouthwatering acidity that lifts the expression. Sun-kissed black fruit and spiced on the finish. It still feels a little compact at this stage, but is full of concentration and finesse with graphite, slate and a bloody tang on the finish. Grapes come from the best two crus of the estate. 2021 saw the latest harvest ever at the estate finishing on October 20th. Winemaker Alessandro Cellai. For the 2023 Solengo, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Petit Verdot is joined by the small addition of Cabernet Franc for the first time. The wine sports a saturated red/purple hue and a ripe, inviting nose of baked blackberries, plum, black olive, lavender, and fresh earth. It was aged for 18 months in 60% new French barriques. Full-bodied, it has polished tannins and a gamey richness that comes through on the palate, with refreshing acidity and a warming finish. The rich style of this site married to the classicism of the year results in a Barbaresco that is going to need a bit of time to come around. Gaiun is often plush and voluptuous. In 2016, large-scaled tannins wrap around all of that fruit intensity, adding a very appealing dimension of structure. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mint, cedar, rose petal and blood orange build into the complex, layered finish. I have seen the Gaiun age effortlessly in its top vintages. For the 2023 Solengo, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Petit Verdot is joined by the small addition of Cabernet Franc for the first time. The wine sports a saturated red/purple hue and a ripe, inviting nose of baked blackberries, plum, black olive, lavender, and fresh earth. It was aged for 18 months in 60% new French barriques. Full-bodied, it has polished tannins and a gamey richness that comes through on the palate, with refreshing acidity and a warming finish. The 2016 Barbaresco Gaiun Martinenga packs a serious punch. The rich style of this site married to the classicism of the year results in a Barbaresco that is going to need a bit of time to come around. Gaiun is often plush and voluptuous. In 2016, large-scaled tannins wrap around all of that fruit intensity, adding a very appealing dimension of structure. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mint, cedar, rose petal and blood orange build into the complex, layered finish. I have seen the Gaiun age effortlessly in its top vintages.
