These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.

Vinous (94)The 2012 Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia stands out for its exceptional finesse and delicacy. Sweet rose petals, mint, cinnamon and red berries are all laced together in a soft, polished Barbera long on class and finesse. Perfumed notes continues to open up in the glass, while brighter, more saline-inflected notes give the wine its sense of energy and tension. This is a magnificent showing. Ideally, readers will be able to give the 2012 at least another year or two in bottle. |

Vinous (95)The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione De Marchi tasted from magnum, is glorious. Dark cherry, blackberries, melted road tar and licorice are some of the many notes that wrap around the palate in a dark, brooding wine endowed with tons of structure. At the time, 1997 was considered a very warm vintage, and it was, but those conditions are pretty much the norm these days. From magnum, the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon remains a baby. To be sure, the style is ripe and flashy, but it all works. What a wine! |

Vinous (96)The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione Privata is superb. A delicate, nuanced wine in this vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon speaks in hushed tones. Silky tannins and highly expressive aromatics add to an impression of total finesse. In many vintages, the Cabernet can be quite big, but not in 2013. This is a brilliant showing from Isole and proprietor Paolo De Marchi. |

Wine Advocate (94)A sweet, floral bouquet leads to expressive layers of fruit in the 2009 Barbaresco Vigneto Gallina. There is an immediacy to the Gallina that is quite appealing. White truffles, red berries and spices emerge over time, adding further complexity. I am surprised by how well the 2009 is showing today, even if it starts to shut down a bit in the glass. The tannins are firm, yet there is more than enough fruit to fill out the wine’s frame. This is one of the better young Gallinas I remember tasting. A rich, textured finish rounds things out in style. There is a lot to like and love in the Gallina. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. |

Wine Advocate (94)The Giuseppe Mascarello 2012 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is only made in the best vintages. We did not see the wine in 2009 and 2011, but we did see it in 2010 and 2013. I have some reservations regarding this expression from the hot 2012 vintage. I tasted the wine at two separate moments, and although my first impression was one of enthusiasm, I was disappointed to see that it did not hold very long once the bottle was opened. This is a delicate and fragile wine that starts with wild berry and tobacco but ultimately reveals sun-drenched fruit, scorched earth and dried cherry skin. The quality of the fruit is very ripe, open and probably prone to some oncoming oxidation due to the hot and dry growing conditions. My suggestion is to catch this iconic wine on the near side instead of the far side. |

Wine Advocate (91)The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara emerges from the glass with a soft, expansive core of fruit, caressing the palate with dark red fruit, sweet spices and flowers. The wine’s inner perfume becomes more expressive with air, yet this too looks to be a Brunello best suited to mid-term drinking. In 2005 the Manachiara isn’t quite the powerhouse it is in most vintages, but it compensates for that with its beautiful sense of harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017. |
