Wine Advocate (94)

The 2010 Barolo Cerretta is a plush and shapely wine with voluptuous contours and soft aromatic layering. This vineyard cru gives rise to some of the plumpest and most fruit-forward expressions of Nebbiolo and the 2010 vintage is an especially good example of that tendency. I love the savory tones of cigar box and old spice that spread so smoothly over the palate. The tannins are very dry and polished in texture. Drink: 2017-2028.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2013 Barolo Cerretta is a graceful and silky expression that shows an elegant disposition. This wine is increasingly introspective and insular, but in a good way. It sparks a sudden curiosity in terms of where its future evolution will take it. The results are balanced and delicate, although the intensity is a bit subdued and underplayed at this young stage. Give it time.

The 2016 Barolo Cerretta is gorgeous. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, flowers and white pepper give this aromatic, mid-weight Barolo a real feeling of finesse that also comes through in the silky red berry fruit flavors. There is just enough grip to give the mid-palate and finish energy, but overall this is a relatively approachable Barolo that will drink well with minimal cellaring.

Germano's 2013 Barolo Prapò is an ample, broad-shouldered Barolo with plenty of Serralunga power and grip. Sweet red cherry, plum, menthol and licorice flesh out in the glass. Even with all of its obvious intensity, the 2013 has a good bit of aromatic lift that adds brightness. The 2013 spent around 45 days on the skins and was aged in medium-sized casks. The Fabio Motta 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Le Gonnare is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon that starts off in cement vats and ages in smaller oak barrels. Fruit comes from a 1.9-hectare site with rocky clay soils at 150 meters in elevation. This wine holds back initially, and that elegant restraint is something you'll find in the classical expressions from this coastal wine appellation. Dark fruit cedes to savory tobacco and pencil shavings. The results are nicely balanced.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
