Wine Advocate (97)

Here's a new discovery that I'd like to broadcast far and near. This Riserva is a new wine from Elena Fucci that was initiated with this vintage. It is a limited-edition wine made only in magnums. In fact, I tasted bottle number 1 of 400 made to write this review. The 2013 Aglianico del Vulture Superiore Riserva Titolo is a dark and savory expression with an evolved and profound bouquet that covers all the bases. It offers dried fruit and blackberry with smoke, ash and crushed river stone. That mineral identity is the wine's most important defining characteristic. Aglianico tends to deliver astringent tannins, but this Riserva shows excellent integration and structural management. A new benchmark wine for southern Italy has just been created.

The 2019 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo is stunning. It opens with a bit of an exotic flair, mixing smoky plum and lavender with animal musk, crushed ashen stone and a whiff of sour citrus that lights up the senses. Then it enters the palate silky and pliant, quickly gaining in youthful tannic tension, but not before providing a preview of mentholated herbal tones and depths of mineral-laden dark fruits that will take center stage after a few years of cellaring. This finishes incredibly long yet structured, leaving a staining of primary concentration to linger under an air of pretty inner florals and savory spice. I believe the 2019 may one day rank among the best vintages ever produced of Elena Fucci’s Titolo.

The 2021 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo 25th Anniversary requires an extended amount of time open in bottle or decanter before truly opening up to reveal its charms. A collage of sweet herbs, crushed rocks, underbrush, black olives and wild berries greets the senses with a tilt of the glass. This is luxuriously smooth, with a balanced inner sweetness and a cascade of mineral tones giving way to balsamic-infused blackberries and tart cherries. It leaves a tinge of sour citrus and rosemary to offset cheek-puckering tension and edgy tannins, finishing incredibly long yet with a welcoming structure that should permit pleasurable drinking after only a few years of cellaring.

Altare's 2014 Barolo is a soft, supple wine with the midweight structure of the year very much on display. Fruity, forward and open, it will drink well with minimal cellaring. The Altare Barolo has a track record of aging well. Even so, the 2014 is decidedly light, even within the context of the year.

It may seem hard to believe, but the 2004 Langhe Arborina takes things to another level. Here it is the interplay of exuberance and vibrancy that is totally captivating. The 2004 is intense, structured and destined to provide exceptional drinking for another decade plus. Scents of cherry, mint, spice and licorice add the final shades of nuance. The 2004 has really blossomed over the last few years.

The 2012 La Villa, a blend of 60% Larigi Barbera and 40% Arborina Nebbiolo, is superb. Wonderfully alive and nuanced, the 2012 races across the palate with beautifully layered fruit and fabulous overall balance. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and new leather notes meld together in the glass. As is typically the case, the Barbera gives richness and mid-palate, while the Nebbiolo is mostly felt in the wine's aromatics and structure.

Altare's 2010 Langhe Larigi (Barbera) stands out for its exceptional textural finesse and elegance. Small red berries, flowers and mint are all woven together beautifully in the glass. The 2010 was aged in 100% new barrels, but there is absolutely not a hint of oak, and the fruit is incredibly pure and vivid. The 2010 isn't one of the biggest Larigis to emerge from this cellar, but it is certainly one of the most polished. Altare elevates Barbera to an entirely new level with a fabulous Larigi that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Burgundies that are so adored at this small, family-run domaine.

The Barbera grape can often act like Nebbiolo showing its best results in the later vintages that end on a cool note. Those conditions are what define the beautiful 2016 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Martina. The wine sees 20 days of maceration with submerged cap, and the bouquet is flowing, polished and impactful as a result. Blackberry, summer cherry and plum rise from the glass. Some 18 months of oak aging adds delicate touches of spice, leather and cedar.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
