France - All White Wines

France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.

In Burgundy, the appellations of ChablisMeursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.

Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.

In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.

Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

Burghound (97)

Smoky and lightly oaky aromas include those of most floral, ripe apple compote, Asian-style tea and a broad range of spice nuances. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the bigger-bodied yet refined flavors that exude a more subtle bead of minerality on the beautifully textured, mouthcoating and hugely long finale that offers better depth as there is just more here. This is doubly impressive in that unlike most vintages of the iconic Ramonet Montrachet, this could actually be enjoyed after only a few years of bottling aging, such is the suppleness of the mid-palate. With that said, this will clearly be more interesting a decade hence.

Reticent, very pure aromas of citrus skin, apple, wet stone, spearmint and spices. Spicy, quite dry and uncompromising; dense, fat, full and minerally. Not higher in sugar than the foregoing samples but more glyceral in texture. Finishes long, classically dry and minerally. This really transcends the vintage.

Burghound (95)

This is perhaps the most elegant and floral-infused wine in the range with its array of various white flower scents, especially acacia that are nuanced by wisps of ocean breeze, iodine and algae. The restrained and well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated and refined mouthfeel while the stony and chiseled finish exhibiting excellent persistence on the bone-dry finish. This is class in a glass and a stunning rendition of the appellation though note well that at least moderate patience is strongly advised.

The Remi Jobard Meursault Les Chevalieres 2021 is a veritable gem exuding a perfect blend of finesse and complexity. Grown in the fertile soils of Jobard's well-tended vineyards nestled in the traditional vine-growing town of Meursault, this wine is an exquisite rendition of the Burgundy Chardonnay varietal. Its production process is a testament to simple techniques coupled with respect for the environment. Under Jobard's adept stewardship, the grapes are manually harvested and undergo a rigorous selection process before they are gently pressed. The juice is then aged for up to 18 months in their cellars, a judicious blend of old and new French oak barrels, fostering a balance between fruit and oak nuances. Characterised by its golden hue, the Remi Jobard Meursault Les Chevalieres 2021 impresses the palate with its crisp acidity, intricate mineral tones and a richness of flavours, drawing to a finish that lingers languorously. This is arguably one of the vintages that showcase the virtuosity of Remi Jobard.

(Morey vinifies fruit from his three sources separately; two of the lots finished their malos in January, the other at the end of April; 4.8 grams per liter acidity): Pure, vibrant aromas and flavors of lemon, lime, acacia flower and clove. Dense and chewy on the palate, with brisk lemony acidity framing and carrying the fruit. Not a hugely concentrated Batard but smooth and nicely delineated, with a lovely echoing spicy aftertaste.

James Suckling (97)

Very cool, delicate and floral with daring elegance. Not the most powerful wine of this ripe vintage, but extremely refined. A very long finish that is marked by chalky minerality. The way that it literally blossoms in the glass after half an hour suggests that this masterpiece has at least a couple of decades of life ahead of it. Decant if you want to drink now.

Wine Advocate (95+)

As readers know Trimbach's iconic Clos Sainte Hune comes from a 1.67 hectare plot on the Grand Cru Rosacker but is sold as Clos Ste Hune since 1919. The densely planted vines are pretty old (more than 50 years on average), with the oldest planted in the 1940s and the youngest in the 1980s. Bottled, like all the prestigious wines of Trimbach in April 2014, the 2013 Riesling Clos Ste Hune shows a very clear and deep, dusty/smoky, mineral nose which impressively reflects the Muschelkalk terroir. Rich, precise and pure also on the nobly textured and highly elegant palate this expressive and full-bodied Riesling is penetrating mineral and piquant but also very juicy. The finish is extremely long and complex. Very promising and stunningly accessible already. However, this wine won't be in the market before 2019/20.

Vinous (98+)

Luminous straw. Penetrating nuances of lime and guava join the lemon verbena, jasmine, mineral and white stone fruit aromas on the knockout, captivating nose. Then dense, complex and multilayered, offering profound flavors of fresh citrus fruit, sweet spices and talcum powder. Closes extremely long, clean and precise; this is a young white wine of utterly mesmerizing beauty. I find this to be one of the best young CSHs I have ever tasted; it is stylistically different but almost on the same quality level as the marvelous 2010 CSH. One sniff (never mind taste) and I was left almost speechless - and I’m not usually one who keeps his mouth shut when I recognize a truly great wine.

Vinous (96)

Vivid straw-green with gold highlights. Highly aromatic on the nose, revealing hints of pear, lime, white pepper, candied ginger, quince and even raspberry. Enters sweet, then turns more austere and piercing. The penetrating, long, very suave finish offers complex, concentrated flavors similar to the aromas. That rare note of raspberry repeats in the mouth. A readier-to-drink CSH than usual, but it will age well. The Clos has been organically farmed since eight years ago, and I while I am very careful about making blanket statements on this subject, I think that the wines are now even better than they were before. Whether it’s the organic farming or not, I don’t know, but the possible connection is intriguing, to say the least.

Pale, bright yellow. Very closed but pure aromas of lemon zest and oil and wet stone. Wonderfully tactile, intense and alive, offering sharply chiseled flavors of citrus fruits, crushed rock and salty minerality and terrific lemony lift. This very deep but relatively austere 2015 calls for a good four or five years of aging but should ultimately be one of the elite premier crus of its vintage. (Dauvissat also opened a bottle of the 2009 Chablis La Forest, which combined wound-up aromas of lemon, crushed and minerals with some sexy biscuit and truffle suggestions of evolution. On the palate, the wine is still incredibly young, boasting terrific lemony energy and cut and showing just the first hints of empyreumatic and oyster shell character. This wine is neither high in alcohol nor in acidity yet it's classic and powerful and should broaden out dramatically in bottle over the next ten years.)

Pale yellow. Bracing aromas of lemon, ginger, chalk and spices. At once dense and penetrating, with outstanding citric cut to the complex, slightly high-toned flavors of lemon zest, white pepper, minerals and subtle resiny spices. Here, too, the wine's intense chalky character gives it an impression of stronger acidity than the numbers would suggest. Boasts terrific fruit intensity, and the wonderfully precise finish goes on and on. A great showing today, and one of the superstars of the vintage.

Pale silver-lemon color. Aromas of lemon ice and minerals complicated by nuances of flowers and almond. At once penetrating and tactile, with juicy, very dry flavors of wet stone, menthol and spices conveying a strong impression of saline minerality. Boasts lovely density and class--and balanced from the start even if it will unwind over the next couple decades in bottle Dauvissat, who added yeasts to this wine due to the hail, said he'd wait ten years. (just 30 hectoliters per hectare produced; this was the first vineyard Dauvissat harvested--on September 2, the second day after the hail storm)

The 2015 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru currently shows a lot of reduction on the nose, although there is plenty of fruit packed behind. The palate is rounded on the entry with moderate acidity, but again, the reduction is suppressing the fruit at the moment. Yet it does convey a sense of purity, and the harmony is tangible behind that reductive veneer. Give this four or five years in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The palate has a lime- and orange-peel-tinged entry, good weight and less reduction than the aromatics. It feels fresh and lightly spiced toward a citric, energetic, complex finish.
