France - All White Wines

France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.

In Burgundy, the appellations of ChablisMeursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.

Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.

In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.

Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

  • Haut-Brion Blanc 2021 (3x75cl)

    James Suckling (98-99)

A complex, thought-provoking white. Vibrant and exciting with green herbs, stones and hints of aniseed and wet sea weed. Sea salt, too. It’s full-bodied and tight on the palate and rather shy. But then it takes off at the end and accelerates. Phenolic, with fine tannins. Iron. Oyster shell. 57% semillon and 43% sauvignon.

  • Henri Boillot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2016 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

Compared to the premier crus at this address, this wine offers another dimension on the nose, with aromas of pear, white flowers, almond and hazelnut complemented by deeper-pitched soil tones and a hint of dried fruits. Hugely rich but surprisingly energetic on the palate, conveying seamless flavors of yellow and dried fruits and salty minerality. Totally saturates the mouth and mounts on the back end without leaving any impression of heaviness. Boillot told me that the 2017 version of this wine is a bit higher in acidity but this bottle boasts excellent verve.

On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and muscular, with lively acids and an impressively structured, introverted profile for the vintage, concluding with a long, saline finish.

Mid lemon yellow. There is a slight reduction to the nose. All the weight appears on the palate with a gorgeously sensual deep white fruit, not heavy at all. White pepper. There is no sign of the reduction on the palate. An exceptional example with more tension at the back, great potential for the long term. The 2017 Bourgogne Blanc is in fact declassified Saint-Romain and Auxey-Duresses blended with fruit from the commune of Meursault, and it's vinified and matured in used 350-liter barrels. Wafting from glass, with notes of toasted nuts, pear and citrus fruit, it's medium-bodied, ample and incisive, with a generous core of delicately textural fruit, framed by juicy acids and concluding with a stony finish. It's one of the finest examples of the appellation to be found.

(Don't Miss!) A discreet but not invisible touch of wood sets off the notably more floral-suffused aromas of citrus confit, exotic tea, anise and white peach. The gorgeously textured large-scaled flavors possess outstanding cut and minerality that contrasts with the exceptionally dry, austere and massively long finish. This strikingly pure effort is packed with potential but note well that it's not likely to be a wine that permits early accessibility. In sum, this is a classic Chevalier in the making, but patience will absolutely be required.

Subtle notes of mineral reduction and wood toast can be found on the aromas of green apple, clove and white flowers. The wonderfully intense, focused and muscular large-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and an almost aggressively minerality on the markedly dry but not really austere finale. Like the Chevalier and Montrachet, this beauty of a Corton-Charlemagne is presently very tightly wound and is going to need extended patience to arrive at its peak. The first Boillot vintage of Clos Richemont, with planting from the 1970s on a very white limestone soil: sternly mineral, almost Puligny in style, suggests Guillaume. Lighter pale primrose, a very light toastiness on the nose. Striking energy at the back, a little bit of salinity, real energy too and very good length. Poruzots occupies a prime mid-slope location, sandwiched between Genevrières and Les Gouttes d’Or, with an exposition east and a bit north, which can only have helped in 2019. The result shows extremely lively citrus aromas, with almost tropical, exotic, up front tones and a bit of spice from the 50% new oak used for the maturation. Wine Advocate (93+)

The 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières has turned out nicely, mingling scents of honeyed pears, mandarin orange, paraffin wax, smoke and toasted nuts in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, it's bright and chalky, with a long, penetrating finish.

  • Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots 2019 (3x75cl)

    Decanter (94)

Poruzots occupies a prime mid-slope location, sandwiched between Genevrières and Les Gouttes d’Or, with an exposition east and a bit north, which can only have helped in 2019. The result shows extremely lively citrus aromas, with almost tropical, exotic, up front tones and a bit of spice from the 50% new oak used for the maturation. The wine has breadth and substance, but there is plenty of fresh acidity that carries it to a long, persistent finish.

  • Henri Boillot Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)

1 x 350 litre barrel. Not especially deep in colour. The 2020 Montrachet has a fascinatingly complex nose, high toned, some bananas, but all the fruits pass across the nostrils. There is a touch of honey, with spring and summer flowers. Another league of intensity over and above Bâtard, yellower fruit overall, like a Bâtard x Folatières cross with yet more concentration. Oof! Tasted: 10/1/2021

    Decanter (93)

This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The aromas begin with a hint of lemon peel and white flowers and then opens up to encompass quince, hazelnut, and spice. The beautiful freshness of the year balances out the impressive concentration of the wine to lead to a surprisingly long finish. 2021 is van Canneyt’s fifth vintage of this wine, whose vines were previously worked by Domaine Coche-Dury.

  • Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2016 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93-94)

(harvested last among the whites, on September 29; no frost here): Bright, green-tinged yellow. Highly distinctive aromas of lime, powdered stone, mint, pine needles and white pepper; fruit is the least of it! A seriously concentrated wine of terroir, showing lovely powdered-stone lift to its flavors of menthol, chalk, brown bread and fresh mushroom. Saline, tightly wound wine with lovely clarity and inner-mouth tension; quite dry but plenty ripe. The salty, tactile finish saturates the palate and leaves the taste buds quivering. Very Corton-Charlemagne! (12.6% without chaptalization)

  • Jean Chartron Chevalier-Montrachet Clos des Chevaliers Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevaliers Grand Cru totals 6 barrels this year. Wonderful mineralité on the nose here: this is tensile, energetic with a subtle sea cave aroma that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with discrete tropical veins towards the harmonious finish, a hint of frangipane on the aftertaste. Superb. • Jean Chartron Chevalier-Montrachet Clos des Chevaliers Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevaliers Grand Cru, which includes one new barrel out of the four (instead of the usual dozen), has a vivid bouquet with yellow fruit, nectarine, crushed limestone and subtle fumé aromas. The palate is well balanced with vibrant acidity, taut and fresh with notes of tangerine, citrus fruit and a pinch of spice. Linear in style, this lingers nicely, though it just needs a bit more nervosité on the finish. Still, this is very promising.

  • Jean-Claude Bachelet Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2021 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru had quite a lot of reduction on the nose when I tasted it at the Domaine. The palate is where the action is: intense citrus fruit, frangipane, lemongrass and crushed stone, gaining weight towards the finish with wonderful persistency. This seems to grow in the glass. Superb.
