France - All White Wines

France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.

In Burgundy, the appellations of ChablisMeursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.

Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.

In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.

Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

The 2015 Chevalier-Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive is stunning from bottle, wafting from the glass with a lovely nose of lemon pith, wet stones, spring flowers and toasted nuts. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with extraordinary intensity and mid-palate depth, a long, lingering finish and an effortless sense of cohesion and completeness. But what's especially impressive about this Chevalier is its grace and textural elegance in this vintage: while its concentration and amplitude certainly reflect the year, nothing is out of place. A step up over even the superb Bâtard-Montrachet and one of the high points of the 2015 vintage in white Burgundy.

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Clavoillon 1er Cru, Leflaive’s largest vineyard at 4.8 hectares, has a very perfumed bouquet with mirabelle, crushed pebble and a touch of sherbet blossoming from the nose. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)

5-Star Wine Just bottled at the end of April. Made from the usual six plots. A pale lemon yellow. The nose has been knocked back a bit and is not yet showing much fruit. Then a little white fruit starts to emerge with some graphite, and a little bit of gunflint. Racy yet ripe with several layers of flavour and excellent length, the acidity perfectly wound in. On the assumption that the bouquet comes back as it should a little later on, after getting over the bottling, this will surely be a 5 star wine

As an esteemed wine connoisseur, I am delighted to introduce the Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vv 2019. A quintessentially prestigious yet artisanal name in the world of Chablis, Louis Michel & Fils flawlessly marries traditional winemaking methods with modern techniques. This specific vintage was cultivated in the prestigious vineyards of Butteaux, renowned for their Kimmeridgian limestone soil. The wine then spent 12 months on fine lees in stainless-steel tanks, respecting the tradition of non-oak Chablis.

The result is truly enchanting: a dazzling golden wine, unveiling an aromatic bouquet of ripe, citrus fruits and dried flowers, with a whisper of mineral depth. On the palate, the structure is remarkably precise, brimming with an exquisite tension of acid and fruit, and culminates in a delicate, lengthy finish. The Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vv 2019 is a pristine expression of the quintessential elegance and profound complexity found in the fine wines of Chablis.

Lemon confit, mint, white pepper and wild flowers all come together in this ethereal, graceful and somewhat elusive Chablis.

Move over Luther Vandross, Thibaud Boudignon is in town and the Clos de la Hutte makes you want to slow dance with it. The 2020 is a wine that makes your shoulders drop such is its tranquility and sense of comfort in your mouth. It blooms in the mouth and does so without any sense of heaviness. The finish, scented with flowers and nectarines, is long, fragrant and textural. I hate using the word minerality as it means so many different things to people, but in my opinion, this has it in spades. It is incredible that the vines were only planted in 2011 on the schistous site on the grounds of a former monastery. Aged in larger format barrels, there's no sense of oakiness, allowing the purity of this wine to shine bright.

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a lot of reduction on the nose that disguises the terroir; it’s difficult to peer beyond the sulfur here. The palate is dense and weighty and slightly honeyed in texture (possibly with just a bit of botrytis?). It feels harmonious toward the finish but does need to address the sulfur issue. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

(production here was just 22 hectoliters per hectare, according to Didier Seguier): Pale, green-tinged yellow. Lemon, lime, white pepper, menthol, botanical herbs and powdered stone on the enticing nose and palate. Densely packed, chewy and tactile; a bit smaller-scaled than the Vaudesir but strong integrated acidity perfectly balances the wine's sweetness and gives the palate outstanding cut. The very long, palate-staining finish conveys a strong impression of dusty extract. Great potential here.

Enjoyable, but not exactly the most Burgundy of whites you will taste this vintage.

Wine Advocate (88-90)

The 2016 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot felt more austere on the nose compared to the Puligny Champ Gain. The palate is nicely balanced but maybe missing the complexity of that aforementioned premier cru. I appreciate the dab of spice on the finish, but I would like more personality to come through in bottle.

Decanter (94)

Lively appley nose that is fresh, vibrant and elegant. With a fresh, silky attack, the palate is very elegant. This has purity and texture, with less power than some other crus but a stylish, citric finish.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2013 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses has an austere, wet granite, nettle and saline nose that is nicely poised. The palate is fresh and crisp with a keen line of acidity, a potent marine influence here with bundles of crisp Granny Smith apples mixed with lemongrass and lime toward the tensile finish. This is one of the best wines from William Fevre in 2013.

Decanter (97)

This comes from two parcels, facing east and south-west, respectively, making a very tidy 2.5ha in total. Showing the delicate touch of one of the very best winemakers in Chablis, this is a saline, focused, wonderfully structured Preuses that has plenty of grip and acidity, sappy, bone-dry flavors and remarkable length.

Vinous (92-95)

(production here was just 22 hectoliters per hectare, according to Didier Seguier): Pale, green-tinged yellow. Lemon, lime, white pepper, menthol, botanical herbs and powdered stone on the enticing nose and palate. Densely packed, chewy and tactile; a bit smaller-scaled than the Vaudesir but strong integrated acidity perfectly balances the wine's sweetness and gives the palate outstanding cut. The very long, palate-staining finish conveys a strong impression of dusty extract. Great potential here.

Indulge in the exquisite Xavier Monnot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly 2020, a quintessential expression of a privileged French terroir. Fashioned by the adroit winemaker, Xavier Monnot, the grapes for this wine are harvested from Les Remilly's South-Eastern facing vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy. That identity imbues this chardonnay with a prominent mineral definition and richness. It exhibits a vibrant and inviting aroma of ripe orchard fruits, followed by a complex, lush palate of apple, citrus, and subtle oak nuances. The labour-intensive manual harvesting, coupled with a careful 12-month ageing period in French oak barrels, endows this wine with concentrated flavours and a tremendous depth. Superior precision, elegance and a subtle tension between richness and freshness define the signature Xavier Monnot style. Dive into the world where tradition marries finesse with the Xavier Monnot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly 2020.
