France - All White Wines

France is revered for its exceptional white wines, which showcase the country's rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroirs, and unwavering commitment to quality. Today, let us embark on a journey through the best white wines that France has to offer, exploring renowned vineyards and the regions that give birth to these extraordinary expressions.

In Burgundy, the appellations of ChablisMeursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet stand tall as the epitome of excellence in white wine production. Wineries such as Domaine Raveneau, Domaine Dauvissat, and Domaine Leflaive craft mesmerizing Chardonnays that capture the essence of the region's unique Kimmeridgian limestone soils. These wines exhibit precision, purity, and a remarkable balance of mineral notes, citrus flavors, and vibrant acidity.

Moving to the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are celebrated for their exceptional Sauvignon Blancs. Domaine Vacheron, Domaine Didier Dagueneau, and Domaine Pascal Jolivet create expressive and terroir-driven wines that showcase the region's distinct flinty minerality, zesty citrus, and herbaceous undertones.

Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.

In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.

Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Renowned vineyards such as Domaine Georges Vernay and Domaine Yves Cuilleron create remarkable Viognier wines that seduce the senses with their exotic aromas of apricot, peach, and delicate floral notes. These wines showcase richness, elegance, and a silky texture that lingers on the palate.

Bright yellow. The nose suggests a wine with terrific inner-mouth tension: yellow peach, white flowers, menthol, minerals and crushed rock. Whether experienced now, or allowed to develop gracefully over the next decade, the Domaine de Montille Bourgogne Blanc Clos du Chateau 2017 offers a touch of brilliance in every sip. A delightful exploration of Burgundy's white wine potential.

  • Domaine du Banneret Chateauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret Blanc 2021 (3x150cl)

Cultivated in the prestigious vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Banneret Chateauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret Blanc 2021 brims with an element of mystery. This distinctive white wine, produced by a 15th generation winemaker, extends the legacy of fine winemaking nurtured on ancestral Berthet-Rayne estate grounds. The grapes are farmed organically, hand-harvested at their peak, and whole bunch pressed and fermented in aged oak barrels. As a result, this wine displays a full-bodied richness with dominant notes of honey, ripe peaches, and delicate hints of vanilla. Its compelling balance between acidity and structure bestow an uncandid elegance, worthy of any discerning palate. Domaine du Banneret Chateauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret Blanc 2021 is a premium wine selection that exhibits the true essence of Chateauneuf-du-Pape's terroir.

  • Faiveley Mercurey Clos Rochette Blanc 2022 (3x150cl)
  • Fontaine-Gagnard Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a rather terse bouquet, more saline than the Criots, touches of oyster shell coming through with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with more weight and density than the Criots, grippy and saline with a long spicy aftertaste. This is excellent - but serious and warranting cellaring for three or four years.

  • Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2015 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Bright yellow. The nose suggests a wine with terrific inner-mouth tension: yellow peach, white flowers, menthol, minerals and crushed rock. Fatter than the Vergers in the mouth, with a seductive orange zest sweetness throughout, but kept firm and bright by piquant minerality. Quite tight on the long, aromatic back end. More austere than the Vergers, and not showing the early balance of that wine.

  • Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2018 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a minty/aniseed tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. There is a very subtle reduction at play. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, and, again, rather reductive. But, there is plenty of matière in situ. Fine boned with a lightly spiced and reassuringly persistent finish developing more and more salinity with aeration. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a crisp, more understated bouquet with more earthy overtones that the domaine's other cuvées. The palate is one of the most terroir-expressive from the domaine, very well defined with a lightly spiced finish. This has a real spring in its step.

  • Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2020 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (93+)

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has wonderful terroir expression on the nose, very nicely balanced, touches of lemon verbena, white peach and a light walnut aroma. The palate is very taut and linear, a fine spine of acidity with impressive salinity, especially on the finish. Great length and poise, this may warrant a higher score in the future.

Bottled. A little more subdued on the nose than the Bâtard-Montrachet. But more intense on the palate. Deeper, creamier and more opulent and still with the right balance between zippy fruit and creamy oak.

  • Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 2021 (3x150cl)

    Burghound (89-92)

Outstanding Top Value. This is more aromatically elegant still with its nose of acacia blossom, just sliced apple, mandarin orange peel and a whiff of anise. There is superb density for a villages-level Puligny with a caressing if not necessarily sophisticated mouthfeel while delivering impressive depth and persistence. This is quite satisfying and offers excellent value.

  • Haut-Brion Blanc 2016 (3x150cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (99)

The white of the vintage is the 2016 Haut Brion Blanc, a Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes just under 30% Sémillon. Amazingly deep and rich, yet vibrant at the same time, it offers an exotic, liquid rock-like minerality as well as notes of citrus zest, crushed limes, and white flowers. It’s unquestionably one of the most concentrated, powerful wines out there, yet it still just glides across the palate with flawless integration of its fruit and acidity. It needs short-term cellaring and will keep for 20-30 years if you’re so inclined.

  • Heitz-Lochardet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Maltroie 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (86)

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroie 1er Cru is a little diffuse on the nose compared to its peers. The SO2 feels quite prominent here, not assimilated with the wine. The weighty palate has a lot of extract and fine acidity but it is missing tension on the finish, where it tends to drift. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.
