  • Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

Bright dark red. Slightly reduced, youthfully medicinal aromas of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Surprisingly rich and sweet on the palate if a bit reduced, offering rather soft, pliant flavors of black cherry, dark berries, menthol and minerals. Finishes with plush, horizontal tannins and very good length. Quite plush in the style of 2015 but I wanted a bit more structure and reserve. Still a bit reduced.

  • Faiveley Musigny Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (93-96)

(just a single new 150-liter barrel of this wine, vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red. Captivating aromas of raspberry, coffee, mocha and pistachio. Plush, dense and deep, conveying more saline minerality and deep soil tones than primary dark fruits in the early going. But this wine boasts compelling sweetness and finishes with dusty, thoroughly ripe tannins and outstanding length. (Incidentally, Faiveley will actually have two different bottlings of Musigny from the 2015 vintage as they purchased a tiny parcel of vines from the Dufouleur family just after the harvest of 2015. The new wine will be bottled in magnums, which Faiveley plans to open in 2025 as part of the family's 200th-anniversary festivities. Beginning with 2016, there will be a single estate Musigny consisting of about 600 bottles.)

  • Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90+)

Bright medium red. Cool, vinous nose offers aromas of black cherry, cassis, blackberry, menthol and licorice. Densely packed, dry and youthfully imploded. A distinctly chewy wine whose youthfully bound-up, slightly tough character belies the vineyard's proximity to Vosne-Romanée. Less sweet than the Chaignots; more backward and savory, with its firm, dusty tannins in need of patience.

  • Felettig Chambolle-Musigny Clos Le Village 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Clos le Village, picked 5 and 6 September with 20% whole bunch fruit, has a broody, introspective bouquet at first, tightly wound mulberry and blackberry fruit, a little earthy with undergrowth aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the whole bunch not noticeable here, apart from a slight textural graininess towards the kirsch and soy-tinged finish. Whilst I prefer the Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes, this remains a fine contribution to the vintage and it should age with style.
  • Follin-Arbelet Corton Les Bressandes Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (86)

The 2015 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru has a bold and generous but smudged nose that lacks real complexity. The palate is chewy and dense, displaying moderate grip and a very conservative finish that feels a little sterile and tastes of sour cherries. Not my cup of tea. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
  • Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

Bright lemon-yellow color. Restrained aromas of mirabelle, yellow flowers and clove. Brisk but not hard, offering a lovely sugar/acid balance to its intense lemon zest and spice flavors. Finishes with good cut but a touch of youthful rigidity. These vines were originally planted in the 1950s but a lot of them have been replaced through the years.

  • Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2015 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Bright yellow. The nose suggests a wine with terrific inner-mouth tension: yellow peach, white flowers, menthol, minerals and crushed rock. Fatter than the Vergers in the mouth, with a seductive orange zest sweetness throughout, but kept firm and bright by piquant minerality. Quite tight on the long, aromatic back end. More austere than the Vergers, and not showing the early balance of that wine.

The 2015 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which came in at around 13.5% alcohol, has a lovely nose with scents of lemon curd, apricot blossom and cold limestone, a touch of mango emerging with time. The palate is extremely well balanced with a fine line of acidity. There is energy and tension here, tightening up towards the finish but still persistent in the mouth. • Georges Lignier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92+)

Palish red with a hint of amber. A bit cooler and more peppery than the Clos Saint-Denis and Clos de la Roche, with its reticent red fruit aromas complicated by herbs and menthol. Then densely packed, savory and intense, more about soil tones than primary fruit. Not a sweet style but youthfully penetrating. Finishes sweet, slightly medicinal and classically dry, with lingering salty and spicy qualities. A rather rigorous wine in the context of the vintage, but then this is Bonnes-Mares, which has traditionally been one of Burgundy's longest-aging grand crus.

The darkest color to this point among these 2015s: bright medium red. Alluring, vibrant perfume of raspberry, dark cherry and rose petal. Sappy and extract-rich, with its deep, slightly medicinal flavors of blueberry, dark raspberry and tart red cherry enlivened by elements of saline minerality and crushed rock. This very concentrated but youthfully backward wine finishes with outstanding length; compared to the Clos Saint-Denis, it's a bit less refined but more powerful This may age longer owing to the richness of its tannins but it's also quite showy today.

  • Georges Lignier Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)

Deep, bright red. Urgent crushed cherry and red raspberry fruit aromas are complicated and lifted by rose petal, white pepper, citrus peel and sexy oak; an essence of Clos Saint-Denis. Rich, layered and deep but also wonderfully brisk, with an exhilarating element of blood orange contributing to the impression of razor-sharp definition. Finishes with fine-grained, noble tannins, subtle rising length and a magically weightless impression. A wine of compelling purity and class, this beauty should be long-lived. The yield here was 30 hectoliters per hectare and the pH is 3.4, according to Stehly. Incidentally, this estate is the largest owner of vines in Clos Saint-Denis, at 1.49 hectares. Stehly picks this fruit in the morning because he uses a smaller tank in which it would be harder to chill the grapes. He continues to sell some of his Clos Saint-Denis to Lucien Le Moine, Marchand-Tawse and Jadot, noting that his clients supply their own barrels and take the wines, with their lees, in January. (He also sells some of his Clos de la Roche.)

The 2015 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru shows quite a bit of new oak on the nose of dusky black fruit laced with tobacco and a little sous-bois, all nicely defined but burly and broad-shouldered. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin and somewhat dry and oppressive at the moment, although there is substance on the finish. Sinewy and almost rustic in style, this is almost an anachronistic Grand Cru, but one that I am fascinated to see evolve.

  • Georges Lignier Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93+)

  • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2015 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru shows quite a bit of new oak on the nose of dusky black fruit laced with tobacco and a little sous-bois, all nicely defined but burly and broad-shouldered. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin and somewhat dry and oppressive at the moment, although there is substance on the finish. Sinewy and almost rustic in style, this is almost an anachronistic Grand Cru, but one that I am fascinated to see evolve. Lo and behold, it ameliorates with aeration, implying that the future is assured. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Villages is fabulous, soaring from the glass with a beautiful bouquet of cherry, raspberry, sweet spices, black chocolate and a framing of creamy new oak. We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
