    (6x150cl) 2017

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (90)

The 2017 de Pez is a pleasant Saint-Estèphe to drink now and over the next handful of years. Élevage (12 months in 30% new oak) has brought out a level of finesse the 2017 did not show from barrel. At the same time, while the 2017 has gained in elegance it has also lost some of the richness it showed en primeur. The 2017 is floral, gracious and medium in body, with tobacco and cedar as well as sweet red berry fruit and floral notes that add brightness on the subtle, silky finish. The 2017 is very nicely done, but I find it a bit light in structure; this is a wine to drink on the young side.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92)

The 2018 Château de Pez was shut when I tasted it from cask with winemaker Nicolas Glumineau, so much so that I felt it was inappropriate to score it because I felt there was a great wine lurking behind that door. And so it turned out. Now in bottle, this has a gorgeous bouquet of lifted blackberry, graphite and flinty aromas, razor-sharp in terms of delineation. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-grained tannins and a subtle marine influence that becomes more prominent with aeration. The oak is wonderfully integrated and the focus very finished. This is one of the best Château de Pez that I have tasted, but it clearly needed to wait until it was in bottle to show its potential.

Really lovely, juicy and bright, light and lean, but there’s texture too, softly grippy tannins that give the St-Estèphe minerality. Cool, crisp, lifted, lovely freshness with blue fruit and lots of pencil led and mint. Balanced, easy, not too sharp not too edgy or hard. • Château de Rayne Vigneau 2003 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)

Pale medium yellow-gold. Reticent aromas of stone fruits, orange zest and menthol. Very sweet but at the same time brisk and penetrating, with pure, intense fruit flavors oforange, tangerine and pineapple lifted by a floral component. Clearly high in alcohol and yet the wine is fresh enough to really cleanse the palate. In fact, this is downright racy for the vintage, and for Sauternes. A great success in the making for this chateau.

Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 Château de Rayne-Vigneau has a waxy, dried pineapple, honey and petrol-tinged bouquet that gains vigor in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant with plenty of botrytis: very harmonious with honeyed fruit laced with dried orange peel, quince and ginger. This builds extremely well in the mouth and fans out in glorious fashion on the finish. This is an excellent Sauternes that should give 20 or 30 years of pleasure.
  • Château de Rayne Vigneau 2013 (24x37.5cl)

Bright, pale yellow. Lively lemon, tangerine, mango and papaya aromas are complicated by menthol and smoky botrytis. The 2017 is very nicely done, but I find it a bit light in structure; this is a wine to drink on the young side.

  • Chateau de Pez 2018 (12x75cl)

  • Chateau de Pez 2022 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (94)

Juicy red, blue, and black fruits, sappy herbs, violets, and chocolate notes all emerge from the 2022 Château De Pez, a ripe, full-bodied, opulent Pez that has a balanced, layered style that's already hard to resist. I love how this has come together since En Primeur, and this is well worth a case purchase. It’s going to deliver the goods any time over the coming two decades or more.

  • Chateau de Pez 2023 (12x37.5cl)

    Decanter (94)

Lovely fragrance of floral and dark bramble fruit on the nose. Smooth and supple, succulent and mouthwatering. I like this a lot, chewy cherry and lean strawberry and crisp cranberry. Great balance, ends a little lean but it’s the minerality that captures and I love it.

The 2020 Pitray is a soft, fruity Côtes de Castillon to drink young, while the fruit remains vibrant. Juicy red/purplish berry fruit, sage, mint and dried herbs finish with pretty savory accents that are just shy of vegetal.

  • Château de Rayne Vigneau 2001 (24x37.5cl)

    Jancis Robinson (18)

Broad and gorgeous - rather more forward than the Lafaurie Peyraguey served immediately before. There's enough stuffing for a long life however.

  • Château de Rayne Vigneau 2005 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92)

    Vinous - Ian D'Agata (91-94)

Bright, pale yellow. Lively lemon, tangerine, mango and papaya aromas are complicated by menthol and smoky botrytis. Sweet, silky and suave, delivering enticing, very pure flavors of peach nectar, guava and honey. This offers plenty of volume and richness without excess weight and finishes with sneaky length.
  • Château de Rayne Vigneau 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (96)

The 2015 Château de Rayne-Vigneau has a waxy, slightly resinous bouquet with finely delineated yellow plum, beeswax, grapefruit and peach scents emerging with time. The palate is fresh and vibrant with a keen line of acidity. Tangy marmalade notes define the finish, with ginger on the aftertaste. Superb. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting.

The 2016 Rayne-Vigneau has a generous bouquet featuring flecks of white chocolate, quince and orange pith, and just a light smokiness in the background. The palate is very well balanced with a tangy marmalade and ginger opening. Delivering fine cohesion, plenty of vigor and great intensity on the finish, this is certainly one of the superior Sauternes of the vintage. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
  • Château de Rayne Vigneau 2017 (12x37.5cl)

The 2017 Rayne-Vigneau has been on a roll of late and this latest release has bags of potential. It has a well-defined, quite intense bouquet with perfumed yellow plum and acacia honey aromas wafting from the glass. The palate is very fresh on the entry with crisp acidity. This feels very pure and full of tension, conveying wonderful energy on the honeyed finish with blood orange on the aftertaste. Superb.
