The 2014 Laroze is a rich, dense wine. Smoke, wild cherry, tobacco and game give the wine its distinctive feral personality. There is no shortage of power or density, but the Laroze never manages to shake its rustic feel. The blend is 68 % Merlot, 26 % Cabernet Franc and 6 % Cabernet Sauvignon. Hubert de Boüard is the consulting winemaker. Tasted two times.Inc. TAX€406.75 -

Checking in as 62% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc that was brought up in roughly 70% new oak, the 2015 Château Laroze is straight up gorgeous. Cassis, black cherries, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings and hints of tobacco all give way to a ripe, sexy, concentrated Saint-Emilion that has sweet, polished tannin, plenty of mid-palate depth and a great finish. This beauty builds with time in the glass, is seamless, and just a sensational drink.Inc. TAX€465.07 -

The 2016 Laroze comes across more Left Bank than Right, showing good definition, but broody and surly at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, intense opening of dark cherry and cranberry fruit laced with white pepper and Chinese five-spice. Good length here, and nice structure. This should age with style. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.Inc. TAX€460.75 -

Opulent and racy, the 2018 Laroze hits all the right notes. Cinnamon, new leather, lavender and cedar add gorgeous aromatic top notes to a core of succulent red cherry fruit. Soft contours add immediacy and allure throughout. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well with minimal cellaring.Inc. TAX€454.56 -

I loved the 2019 Château Laroze from barrel and it's showing nicely from bottle, with an almost Médoc-like bouquet of red and black currants, tobacco, cedar pencil, and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with silky tannins, this complex, nuanced, elegant Saint-Emilion is going to drink beautifully for 10-15 years.Inc. TAX€423.07 -

The 2018 Larrivet Haut-Brion has developed into a gorgeous wine. There is plenty of the tannin I saw in my barrel tastings, and yet all the elements are so well balanced today. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting. The 2012 Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc felt as if it was burdened with too much new oak on the nose, though underneath lie some attractive citrus fruit mixed with peach and apricot skin. I will be optimistic and opine that the oak will be subsumed as long as it is afforded two or three years of cellaring. The palate is well balanced, the new oak lending creaminess and a slight nuttiness - indeed, blind you might almost mistake it for a Meursault. Partly it is because of the new oak, but I can still see how this has wide appeal and you end up being seduced. Tasted January 2016.Inc. TAX€332.87 -
