Vinous - Neal Martin (86)

The 2003 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between September 10 and 24. It has a fragrant bouquet of well-defined black fruit mixed with fresh fig and a touch of canned prune, but as with the 2003 Sociando-Mallet, there is no sense of overripeness. The fleshy palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin and touches of prune, white pepper and sage. Missing some tension on the finish, but otherwise this is drinking well. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.

Vinous - Neal Martin (87)

The 2011 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked between September 7 and 27. It has a simple, earthy bouquet that feels a bit dull compared to the excellent 2009 and 2010 vintages. The medium-bodied palate is nicely balanced, simple but focused, displaying fine tannin and tobacco-tinged black fruit on the rather short finish. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.

Vinous - Neal Martin (89)

The 2012 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked between September 28 and October 15. It has more definition and vivacity than the 2011, offering black fruit, tobacco and graphite notes; the Cabernet is clearly in the driver’s seat while Merlot gives directions. The ripe palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is perhaps the most modern in style of all the Cuvée Jean Gautreaus that I have tasted, yet there is panache here, and it feels long and tender in the mouth. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.

The 2014 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot picked between September 23 and October 11. It has a much more appealing bouquet than the 2013, offering a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and smoke; clarity increases with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh, showing supple tannin, a fine line of acidity and a well-defined, sensual finish that takes the oak in stride. This is an excellent Cuvée Jean Gautreau that should age with style. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.

Wine Advocate (88)

The 1978 La Lagune remains deep in color, with no sign of maturity. The expansive bouquet suggests roasted nuts, plums, and fresh new oak. On the palate, the wine is tannic, but lush and silky, with oodles of fruit present. It has been slow to evolve, and at its age, still tastes young and vigorous. Anticipated maturity: Now-2005. Last tasted, 12/89.

Unquestionably the greatest La Lagune until the 2005 was conceived, the 1982 exhibits a dense ruby/purple-tinged color along with a big, sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, smoky toast, and forest floor, a plush, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and sweet tannin. It is close to full maturity, and should keep for another decade. Release price: ($65.00/case)

Decanter (93)

Now certified organic, and converting to biodynamics from this year. It displays a confident weight to the damson fruits that are hugely elegant and well placed. A little closed when tasted on two occasions, and the high Petit Verdot content of this wine is no doubt contributing to its slight austerity at this stage, but it also brings that beautifully welcome whoosh of black fruit spicing. Very good quality, elegant and long-ageing, just a dash below the exceptional 2015.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (92)

The 2017 La Lagune is powerful and dense, but also a bit rough around the edges. Tobacco, game, licorice, smoke and dried flowers along with big, coarse tannins give the 2017 its decidedly hearty feel. Even so, there is quite a bit of complexity and plenty of personality. The 2017 is not exactly finessed, but it has a lot going on. The 2017 needs time to come together, but it is promising, that is for sure.

The 2019 La Lagune offers exquisite transparency on the nose - one of the most terroir-expressive Pessac-Léognan wines this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline with a very integrated and poised finish that lingers in the mouth. Wonderful - could this be the best La Lagune in years? Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

A breakthrough effort as well as a sleeper of the vintage, La Tour Carnet (50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot) has been completely resurrected under the dynamic leadership of its visionary proprietor Bernard Magrez. He has turned out a dense ruby/purple-colored 2001 displaying gorgeous aromas of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, smoke, spice box, and flowers. Supple tannin, medium to full body, terrific fruit extraction, and admirable texture as well as purity suggest this noteworthy achievement will drink well between 2006-2016. The 2000 was very good, but 2001 is even better, signaling a return of form to this long forgotten classified growth.

The 2021 La Tour Carnet is another gorgeous wine in this range from Bernard Magrez. Deeply pitched spice notes meld into a core of red plum/cherry fruit, followed by brighter, high-toned floral accents that add lift. La Tour Carnet has a track record of aging quite well. I suspect that will be the case here as well. La Tour Carnet remains one of the most under the radar wines in all of Bordeaux. Tasted four times.
