Vinous - Neal Martin (88-90)

The 2023 G de Château Guiraud has a perfumed bouquet with light tropical scents, although there is a bit of oak that shaves away some of its complexity. The palate is malic on the entry and lightly spiced, with a touch of lemongrass and pear on the finish. It could do with more length, but I appreciate the intensity.

An exclusive revelation to the discerning palate, the Gilette 1970 bestows an enriching canvas of flavours. It originates from Sauternes, a renowned wine region in Bordeaux, France, exemplifying the reputable tradition of winemaking in this terroir. This exquisite wine celebrates a half-century of maturation, proudly wearing its vintage heritage.

Claude Gilette, the esteemed winemaker, ensured an intimate, low-volume production, underscoring its rarity and uniqueness. Regarded for his expertise in Noble Rot, Gilette ensures the mold Botrytis cinerea meticulously infects the grapes, intensifying their sweetness, until hand-harvested at the perfect moment of ripeness. Consequently, the Gilette 1970 promises a profile that is intense, yet refined, with harmonious notes of honeyed fruit, ginger spice, and candied lemon, underpinned by a tantalising acidity that beckons a memorable finish.

In conclusion, Gilette 1970 captures the quintessence of Sauternes, truly a gem worth uncorking for those special moments. Savour this extraordinary wine revered by connoisseurs worldwide.

The 2019 Grand Village Blanc, 25% Sémillon and 75% Sauvignon Blanc (Bordeaux clones and massal selection) has a perfumed bouquet of yellow plum, nectarine and honeysuckle. The 2020 Grand Village Blanc has a fresh bouquet with lime, grapefruit and peach skin scents, quite pure, not complex, though seductive. The palate is well balanced with a nervy entry, lovely oily texture (which Baptiste Guinaudeau attributes to the more solar vintages) with a touch of bitter lemon, pear drop and stem ginger towards the finish. The 2021 Grand Village Blanc was picked September 9–13 and for the first time was vinified in the cellar, which is cooler and slowed the vinification down. It has a lively, irresistible bouquet of lime, white peach and apricot blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity, quite tensile, and very fresh, featuring gooseberry, lime and a touch of white pepper. Just delicious.

The 2015 Les Champs Libres has really come together beautifully since I last tasted it. Suave, silky and beautifully textured in the glass, the 2015 speaks to harmony above all else. Aging in barrel has softened the contours nicely in this super-expressive white. Hints of slate, mint, green pear, jasmine and a kiss of French oak are beautifully woven together in a white wine of total class and pedigree. I loved it.

The 2020 Les Champs Libres is gorgeous right out of the gate. In this vintage Les Champs Libres is quite savory and floral, with the fruit pushed into the background. Dried flowers, mint, sage, white pepper and almonds all open with some time in the glass. Like the Grand Village Blanc, Les Champs Libres comes across as a bit reticent. I love the energy and vibrancy here. Give this time in bottle.

Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting. The 2012 Haut-Brion Blanc has an entrancing bouquet of honeysuckle, fresh pear and greengage that is beautifully defined and seamlessly enmeshed with the oak. The palate is well balanced with just a patina of new oak, smooth and harmonious, fine mineralité here with a spicy finish that leaves the tongue tingling. This is very well crafted and it will just get better and better. Yes, my drinking window does advise ten years in bottle, since in my experience only this and the late Laville Haut-Brion age so magnificently. Therefore, that score may well rise in the future if I am ever afforded a chance to re-taste this superb white Bordeaux. Tasted January 2016.
