The 2017 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc has a very impressive bouquet with flinty, citrus fruit that evolves more discrete tropical scents with aeration, hints of dried honey, lime and mango emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite saline in the mouth and fine weight. A precise and quite sustained finish. The 2008 Malescot St Exupery has a conservative, correct bouquet that to be frank is rather unexciting compared to its peers, although it does open and reveal briary and crushed rose petal scents and bingo, you are soon under its spell. The palate is medium-bodied with “furry” tannins, good depth of fruit and it has a fine line of acidity. I like the spine of this Margaux and the classicism shown towards the bright finish. Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years.
