With just under 2,000 cases produced, the 2023 Château Feytit-Clinet comes from one of my favorite producers in Pomerol, an estate located in the Clinet sector and run by Jérémy Chasseuil that's always worth seeking out. Based on 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc from gravel and clay soils and aged 15 months in 70% new French oak, it offers assorted darker berry fruits, scorched earth, chocolate, and leafy tobacco on the nose. On the palate, it's concentrated and full-bodied, with a broad, layered mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. I have tasted the 1961 Château Figeac just once before, when it only intimated a great wine. This bottle proves it. Clear and deep in color, it has a heavenly bouquet that is not dissimilar to the 1964: very concentrated with mulberry, dried honey, molasses and stewed apricots. Magnifique! The palate is medium-bodied and perfectly balanced, perhaps less rounded than the 1964, but driven along by perfectly judged acidity with black truffle and salted licorice surfacing towards the structured and sustained finish. I suspect that there is some variability between bottles, judging by others' comments, but clearly if it is your lucky day, you are in for a treat. Tasted June 2015.Inc. TAX€6,904.54 -

Sweet and rather winningly balanced. Light digestive-biscuit flavour! Transparent. Fresh and clean and very 21st century. Lively and utterly winning. The 1986 Figeac showed better than a previous example several years ago. Offering blackberry, cedar and mint, the nose needs a few minutes to really click into gear. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fine acidity, quite youthful given that it is 40 years old. As before, the Cabernet shifts this towards the Left Bank, which is where I thought it was from until its identity was revealed! The 1986 is a bit square-jawed but still full of charm. This ex-château bottle, opened for my wedding anniversary, shows beautifully at 15 years old. Decanting for three hours clearly benefits the aromatics, which leap in intensity with aeration. The palate is classic Figeac, equidistant between Left and Right Bank in style, touches of dark chocolate and clove infusing the dark berry fruit. Love this vintage of Figeac, and it is fully delivering at the ten year point, still teetering on the edge of its mature drinking window. Brambled fleshy black fruits, firm tannins, edge of cocoa, incense, steel and mandarin peel, grip and length. Great quality. Harvest September 21 to October 15, 100% new oak for ageing. Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years.
