  • Figeac 2012 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (93)

The 2012 Figeac has a broody and backward bouquet with black fruit, autumn leaves, truffle and cedar. Not unlike Lafleur. The palate is fresh on the entry with pliant tannins, open and generous, layers of red fruit with a dash of white pepper and allspice. It fans out wonderfully towards the finish that just lacks a bit of persistence. The second bottle at Bordeaux Index's tasting shows a little more spiciness on the finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

  • Gracia 2012 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95+)

This estate consistently turns out some of the greatest wines of St.-Emilion. Michel Gracia obviously learned a lot from his close friend Alain Vauthier at Ausone. The 2012 Gracia has an opaque bluish/black color and a gorgeous nose of blueberry liqueur intermixed with blackberry, incense, graphite and spice. Medium-bodied and super-concentrated, with well-integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol, this is a big, rich, profound 2012 to drink over the next two decades. Patience might be warranted to sit on it for 4-5 years prior to pulling corks. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035. Kudos to Michel Gracia! This tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol from a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon cropped at a low yield of 22 hectoliters per hectare.

  • Grand Village 2012 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (88)

The 2012 Acte 4 has quite a strict bouquet at first that needs more encouragement than other vintages from the glass. It is well defined with blackberry, boysenberry, touches of graphite and pressed violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, well balanced and displaying well judged acidity. It just seems to run out of ideas two-thirds of the way through, lacking the energy displayed by the previous vintage. Tasted at the Acte vertical in London.

The 2012 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has an impressive cassis-tinged bouquet with fresh tobacco and graphite infused black fruit that are very well focused and neatly integrated with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a keen thread of acidity, finely proportioned with a vibrant graphite-infused finish. One of the standout Left Bank wines of the vintage. • Haut-Bailly 2012 (6x75cl)

The 2012 Haut Bailly is quite fragrant and inviting. Dark raspberries, mint, crushed flowers, spices and rose petals all lift from the glass in this feminine, gracious Haut-Bailly that offers considerable near and medium-term appeal. All the elements fall into place in an effortless, stunningly beautiful wine endowed with personality and class. One of the wines of the vintage, the Haut Bailly will drink well for two decades-plus. This is a superb showing from proprietor Bob Wilmers and his team headed by Véronique Sanders. The decision to lower temperatures in fermentation and go for a soft, gentle extraction, along with strict selection has paid off big time.

  • Haut-Brion 2005 (6x75cl)

    Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (100)

The stand out First Growth in my recent retasting of the 2005s, and again here it blew us all away. This was a drought year, with almost no rain from May to October, but never excessively hot, and the balance is evident. The slightly dry tannins that affected many 2005s when young were never such a problem on the warm soils at Haut-Brion, and this is generous, exceptionally nuanced and flavourful, with vivid black cherry and cassis fruits, riven through with liqourice, cocoa bean, pomegranate, sage, cocoa bean and luscious acidities. Jean-Phillip Delmas winemaker, two years into his tenure at the time after taking over from his father Jean-Bernard Delmas in 2003. 100% new oak.

  • Haut-Brion 2012 (12x75cl)

    Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (98)

Whiff of gunsmoke reduction, opening up to show concentrated dark berry fruit with liqourice, pencil lead, campfire and black truffle. Stately and muscular, a brilliant counterpoint to the grace of La Mission Haut-Brion. Grips the palate, this is one of the highest alcohol wines in the vintage and yet it is balanced, with so much flavour and presence that just fills the palate and hangs on. I remember loving this En Primeur, and at the 10 years on mark it remains one of the wines of the vintage. 100% new oak.

  • Haut-Brion Blanc 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96+)

Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting. The 2012 Haut-Brion Blanc has an entrancing bouquet of honeysuckle, fresh pear and greengage that is beautifully defined and seamlessly enmeshed with the oak. The palate is well balanced with just a patina of new oak, smooth and harmonious, fine mineralité here with a spicy finish that leaves the tongue tingling. This is very well crafted and it will just get better and better. Yes, my drinking window does advise ten years in bottle, since in my experience only this and the late Laville Haut-Brion age so magnificently. Therefore, that score may well rise in the future if I am ever afforded a chance to re-taste this superb white Bordeaux. Tasted January 2016.

  • Haut-Marbuzet 2005 (12x75cl)

This has the powerful damson-plum intensity of great cabernet sauvignon grown in the northern Médoc. The tannins are black but not aggressive, their stoniness cushioned by layers of fruit. There's also an umami character, something like woodland mushroom and the savory skin of tiny wild cherries. An elegant wine performing at the top of its terroir, this will be delicious around eight to 12 years from the vintage.

  • Jean Gautreau 2012 (6x75cl)

The 2012 Cuvée Jean Gautreau is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc picked between September 28 and October 15. It has more definition and vivacity than the 2011, offering black fruit, tobacco and graphite notes; the Cabernet is clearly in the driver’s seat while Merlot gives directions. The ripe palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is perhaps the most modern in style of all the Cuvée Jean Gautreaus that I have tasted, yet there is panache here, and it feels long and tender in the mouth. • L'Eglise-Clinet 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (100)

A wine that wins my nomination for the title of "wine of the vintage" is the 2012 L'Eglise Clinet, a fleshy and enveloping Pomerol evocative of dark cherries and berries mingled with licorice, spices, pencil lead, truffle and rose petals. Full-bodied, broad and textural, it's lavish and expansive, with terrific depth at the core, supple tannins and a long, resonant finish. Seamless, charming and impeccably balanced, this transcends the vintage, and while it's deceptively drinkable now, it remains a mere adolescent at age 11.

  • L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daene 2005 (12x75cl)

Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 L’Extravagant de Doisy Daëne has 3.9grams of acidity, 192 grams per liter of residual sugar and 12.3% alcohol. The 2005 has a powerful bouquet with honey, mandarin, a touch of petrol and yellow flowers on the nose, later developing that seductive marzipan scent that draws you in like a tractor beam. The palate is unctuous in the mouth that is probably going to be sugar-coated for the next year or two, but there are some gorgeous peach and citrus notes that flourish on the finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 La Fleur Pétrus has a mint-fresh bouquet, vigorous and vivid, with delineated red cherry, raspberry and cassis fruit under which is a strata of wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is a more understated Pomerol but there is real nuance here, black truffle and leather tinging the introspective black fruit. Yet behind that is harmony and finesse, notwithstanding impressive length and sustain.

  • L'Evangile 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Spectator (100)

Dark in color, almost purple black, with pure tapenade and hints of ripe plum and berry. Full-bodied, with layer upon layer of velvety tannins and chocolate, berry, vanilla and tea flavors. Lasts for minutes. I am blown away by this wine. This has been amazing since the moment I tasted it from barrel. Reminds me of the superb 1950. Best after 2015. 3,500 cases made. -JS

  • L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daene 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

It is more a force of nature than a wine!

  • La Clarte de Haut-Brion 2012 (1x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (91)

The 2012 Clarté de Haut-Brion is slightly more youthful than the Chapelle de la Mission with black brambly fruit, sandalwood and light rolled tobacco aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry. There is fine weight for a Deuxième Vin and a satisfying freshness with a judicious pepperiness adorning the tensile finish. Excellent. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year-On tasting.

  • La Closerie de Camensac 2005 (6x75cl)

Exuding elegance and subtlety, the La Closerie de Camensac 2005 is a sublime choice for discerning connoisseurs. An eye-catching offering from the renowned Haut-Médoc appellation, this Bordeaux malefic magnificently captures the essence of its terroir. Under the expert stewardship of Château de Camensac's vintners, this delightful vintage is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The choice of grapes imbues it with a complex, multi-layered character that unfolds wonderfully on the palate.

Matured for fifteen months in French oak barrels, the wine has a depth of flavour, integrating rich fruit and subtle spice notes. The producer's attentive viticultural practices ensure this wine is a true expression of its vintage, reflecting the climatic oddities and distinctive characteristics of the 2005 harvest. An embodiment of finesse and balance, La Closerie de Camensac 2005 is a gratifying exploration of Medoc's generous varietals and its microclimate idiosyncrasies.

A sleeping giant. Dark ruby in color, showing aromas of blackberry, cèpe and green olive, with a hint of mineral. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a supercaressing mouthfeel. • La Fleur Petrus 2012 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 La Fleur Pétrus has a mint-fresh bouquet, vigorous and vivid, with delineated red cherry, raspberry and cassis fruit under which is a strata of wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is a more understated Pomerol but there is real nuance here, black truffle and leather tinging the introspective black fruit. Yet behind that is harmony and finesse, notwithstanding impressive length and sustain. It may be slightly over-shadowed by the sensational Trotanoy, but Pomerol-lovers will lap up this fantastic La Fleur-Petrus from the JP Moueix team. Tasted January 2016.

Bordeaux's relatively diverse weather, particularly its rainfall, means that vintage variation can be quite broad between some years. However advances in wine making techniques, technology and investment has meant that many chateaux are still able to create very good wines in "lesser vintages". From the best vintages wines are made that are clambered for all over the world and mature excellently for many years. This is a selection of some of our favourite vintages from Bordeaux over the last few decades, as well some more recent ones.
