Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2020 Announce de Bélair-Monange is not a de facto Deuxième Vin, but rather a selection of barrels made in the winery. It has a well-defined bouquet with black cherries, raspberry coulis and faint black truffle shavings. The oak is neatly assimilated. The palate is very smooth, with layered dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and a touch of cumin. Gentle build with a caressing finish. Lovely.

I loved the 2015 Château Arnauld and it’s a seriously delicious, charming Cru Bourgeois that offers loads of cherry and blackberry fruit intermixed with spicy oak and scorched earth. With medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful balance and loads of fruit and texture, I suspect it’s a terrific value and should easily keep for 10-15 years.

This shows blackberry, blue-fruit, dark-chocolate and black-truffle aromas that follow through to a full body with crushed-stone, fruit and black-olive character. Layered with firm tannins that are chewy and intense. A serious Aromes. 65% merlot, 18% cabernet franc and 17% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2024.

Aromes de Pavie comes from new parcels purchased in 2017 (on top of the plateau). As from 2018, it is no longer a second wine, per se, as these are dedicated parcels for Aromes, giving it its own identity. The 2019 Aromes de Pavie is composed of 65% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it strides out confidently with notes of baked black plums, blackberry preserves, and chocolate-covered cherries, leading to hints of pencil lead, cardamom, and rose oil. Full-bodied, voluptuous, and super-plush, the palate is chock full of juicy black fruits with a spicy undercurrent and plush tannins, finishing with a refreshing lift and lots of mineral sparks. This impressive wine should age very well.

Leather, chocolate, toast and soft floral tones on the nose with hints of spice and blueberries. Ripe, round and powerful on the palate, with fleshy tannins that fill and cushion the mouth. Sharper acidity than 2018 or 2019 gives energy and drive. Racy and sophisticated, though still somewhat closed. Blackcurrant, cherry, plum, liquorice and tobacco linger with cinnamon warmth. Textured, vibrant and built for at least 10 more years.

Coming all from limestone soils and equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 50% new French oak, the 2021 Aromes De Pavie sports a solid ruby/plum hue as well as a medium to full-bodied, deep, seamless profile in its riper, mostly red fruits, crushed stone, graphite, and floral-laced aromas and flavors. With beautifully integrated oak, ripe, velvety tannins, and a brilliant finish, this is a legit, serious, gorgeous wine. It's probably the best second wine in the vintage. Drink bottles over the coming 15 years.

Wine Advocate (82)

This medium ruby wine remains closed, but exhibits adequate ripeness of fruit. However, the hard tannins are cause for concern. The 1981 Ausone is a medium-weight wine, with good concentration, but I believe it will always be an austere, tough-textured, charmless wine. It still needs 10 years to soften and develop. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Last tasted, 1/90.

Wine Advocate (95)

Is the 1999 Ausone the wine of the vintage? Dense purple color, a compelling bouquet of licorice, minerals, black and blueberry liqueur, extraordinary delineation, high tannin, superb extract, and phenomenal richness all are the stuff of a legend. This wine seems impossible to have emerged from a vintage like 1999. Proprietor Alain Vauthier produced only 20,000 bottles because he eliminated one-fourth of the tiny crop. The result is out-and-out fabulous, but the wine needs 12-15 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050.

Wine Advocate (98+)

Two bottles were badly corked, which is certainly a scary situation for a wine where only 1,000 or so cases were produced. However, a third bottle was magical and just short of perfection. Its saturated purple color was followed by a surprisingly more evolved and open wine than I had written in my tasting note in 2003, where I predicted maturity between 2020 and 2075. This wine displays wonderful, sweet tannin and a big, sweet kiss of truffle, crushed rock, blueberry, blackberry, and licorice. Extremely rich, full-bodied, with astonishing power, precision, and delicacy, this is a sumptuous wine that should age well for 50-60 years, but in the case of the one bottle out of three that was not corked, it seemed far more evolved and forward than I suggested in my write-up in 2003.
