Decanter (98)

A superb vintage of this renowned prestige cuvée, this is made from a base of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay, to which is added 9% of red wine. Despite ageing on its lees for 10 years, it remains almost shockingly youthful, its vividly primary flavours of red cherry, strawberry and nectarine wrapped up in a taut, tense frame. It’s silky in texture and intricately complex on the long, elegantly harmonious finish, underlined by a saline chalkiness, and it demonstrates all the requisite completeness and character for long ageing, promising a slow and dignified evolution to come.

Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata 2015 (6x75cl)

In the highly celebrated vintage of 2015, the standard-bearer of this DOCG reaped the benefits of the favourable vintage conditions to produce a genuinely singular and outstanding wine. As such, they have successfully produced one of the best iterations of Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata, garnering a wonderful 97+ points from Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) who waxes lyrical about this pure and delicate expression of Sangiovese finding:

"this new release to be quite distinctive and exquisitely beautiful, setting it apart from many of the past vintages we are most familiar with"

"The bouquet offers seamless and smooth transitions...Wines from Biondi-Santi are made for the long haul, and the fresh acidity that characterizes this estate is the principal reason why."

Incredibly, this may well be one of the best wines ever produced by Tenuta Biondi Santi in its very long history. The only comparable wine of the estate in recent years, the 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (98 points WA), and the 2015 Annata is obviously a lot more accessible than the 2006 Riserva.

Scoring 93 points from Antonio Galloni, he declares that anyone “...who enjoy[ed the] Blanc de Noirs will adore the PN VZ 16”. Also, the second vintage of this cuvée is worthy follow up to the inaugural 2015 being “...reminiscent of the house's legendary blanc de noirs Bollinger ’Vieilles Vignes Françaises’ ”.

Made purely from Pinot Noir and sourced predominantly from Verzenay, this is a "wonderfully inviting" varietal expression of the 2016 vintage. PN VZ16 showcases the charm of this unique terroir by conveying its inherent tension and energy through the wine. The notes of “sweet red cherry, Mirabelle plum, spice, mint and dried flowers” all grace this “wonderfully translucent, expressive Blanc de Noirs” before combining with the beautiful, saline finish.

2017

Cantina Terlano Nova Domus Riserva 2017 (6x75cl) Nova Domus Riserva is a classical regional blend of 60% Pinot Blanc, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Sourced from low-yielding vineyards, the sites are composed of quartz soil with a volcanic origin. Remarkably rich in its mineral content, the 2017 vintage saw a deliberately increased use of older oak during maturation. With less new oak influence, Rudi Kofler was able to allow the pristine fruit purity and terroir minerality to shine through.

Greg Sherwood MW says this is “one of the most seductive and majestic Italian white” he has ever tasted. Monica Larner notes the “profound with a medley of stone fruit, peach, melon and citrus aromas” and calls this a “true beauty of the Italian Dolomites”.

Caro 2017 (6x75cl)

A remarkable collaboration between Lafite-Rothschild and Catena Zapata, Caro is a wine that combines prestige, prowess, and incredible affordability. Often making it an extremely popular wine with Cru clients.

Dominated by Malbec and blended with 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, Caro 2017 is sourced from prime parcels in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. It is also a fairly rare wine with only 3,000 – 6,000 cases of production each vintage.

The 2017 is tremendously successful, achieving a whopping 97 points from James Suckling who praised its “tight and contracted” structure whilst showcasing “a level of shyness to its strength”. Well supported by Decanter’s Alejandro Iglesias, he awarded the wine a magnificent 96 points and applauded its “velvety feel, rich texture and fine tannin” (DC).

Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95-97)

The 2014 Clos de Tart Grand Cru will contain 40% whole bunch fruit in the final. It was picked from September 17 until September 22. This blend that I tasted included the young vines at the bottom of the vineyard that may or may not be deselected to make a Forge de Tart (the decision will be made next year). It is also the first vintage that does not include old vines at the northwest corner that were pulled up in spring 2014, due to be replanted in four years' time. It has a very well defined bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, fine mineral tones and is quite harmonious with hints of wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied and I feel this has tightened up since I tasted it in September 2015. The fruit also seems a little darker. Blackberry and wild cherry, with a hint of cola and certainly more tangible mineralité on the finish, as you can feel the mouth tingling long after it has bid adieu.

Decanter (98)

Captivating spice-led nose, this is a lithe, dynamic and athletic style of Châteauneuf. Very well balanced and focused with great aromatic precision. The alcohol is gently warming on the finish but this is nonetheless just gorgeous. Grown on sand in lieux-dits La Guigasse and Pignan, destemmed, fermented in tronconic vats then matured mostly in demi-muid and a 10% portion in amphora for 14 months.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Clos Fourtet is a little closed to begin, opening out to reveal notes of baked black cherries, blueberry preserves and dried mulberries plus hints of cast-iron pan, fertile loam and cigar box with a waft of sandalwood. Full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and compelling freshness supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long and mineral laced. Very impressive!

Wine Advocate (97)

A blend of 60% Grenache aged in concrete and 40% Mourvèdre aged in new barriques, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina is a modern-day monster. This is rich and powerfully concentrated, loaded with scents of vanilla and baking spices, yet it also possesses masses of red fruit (raspberries, cherries and plums), a wonderfully creamy and intense mid-palate and a long finish. It completely hides its no-doubt considerable alcohol.

Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the most eagerly collected Second Growths - from just above Pauillac in Saint-Estèphe. The 2020 vintage has chalked up a string of stunning scores, and the bottle will feature a special engraving commemorating the 20th anniversary of Michel Reybier’s acquisition of the famous pagoda-fronted property.

The Cos d’Estournel 2020 delighted Lisa Perrotti-Brown with “explosive scents of ripe red and black currants, black cherry preserves and black raspberries” that concluded with “a whole firework display of mineral nuances”. Boasting huge concentration matched by flawless balance, it charms Dunnuck (95-97+ points) with “a wonderful sense of purity and elegance” which makes it a “brilliant example of the vintage”. Recommending a drinking window out to 2060, Neal Martin (95-97 points) suggests that the 2020 vintage has further room to shine:

Dominio del Aguila Ribera del Duero Reserva 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

Quite different from the 2015 was the 2016 Reserva, a red from a cooler year with good yields, so they were able to increase production of this wine over twofold and increase the quality! It took some seven months to complete fermentation, and the élevage in barrel lasted some 29 months. It has an incredible nose, violets and something musky, intriguing, complex and nuanced, mysterious and difficult to define, with some notes reminiscent of soy sauce. The palate is seamless and with terrific balance, a silky texture and very fine but chalky tannins. This is an amazing Ribera del Duero. 18,834 bottles and 519 magnums produced. It was bottled in April 2019.

Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6x75cl)

This Chilean estate produces some of the most consistently highly rated Cabernet Sauvignon in world. Helmed by Enrique Tirado, working hand in hand with top Bordeaux consultant Eric Boissenot, this Alto Maipo Valley estate sits 650 metres above sea level on an ancient alluvial terrace left by retreating Andean glaciers. Planted almost entirely (90%) with Cabernet Sauvignon, Dol Melchor's terroir is the ideal combination of rocky soils and cooling breezes blowing down from the Andes for these 30-year-old vines.

With an extraordinary 100 points from James Suckling, the 2018 vintage has been catapulted into history as the first ever perfect score for Don Melchor. Given this wine's brilliance in relation to its reasonable price, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon has earned itself a place on the Wine Spectator's exclusive "Collectible Wines List", reserved for exceptional wines more than worth the money.

More herbal notes of blackcurrants, green tobacco, cedar, and graphite emerge from the 2018 Magari, a Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot blend brought up in French oak. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and downright seamless on the palate, this beauty is another Bordeaux look-alike with incredible class. It has some upfront appeal, with supple tannins and plenty of fruit, yet it's going to age gracefully for 15-20 years on its balance.

Castellare I Sodi Di San Niccolo 2016 (6x75cl) A strong follow-on from the magical 2015, this 2016 feels like a step up from its predecessor. A perfectly balanced growing season has yielded a wine with excellent density of fruit, clarity and elegance. Deeply pitched black cherry and wild forest fruits alongside decadent herbal notes and a touch of spice make for a truly beautiful and classic Super Tuscan. In Stock in Cru LCB

Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve 2019 (6x75cl)

Decanter (98)

Captivating spice-led nose, this is a lithe, dynamic and athletic style of Châteauneuf. Very well balanced and focused with great aromatic precision. The alcohol is gently warming on the finish but this is nonetheless just gorgeous. Grown on sand in lieux-dits La Guigasse and Pignan, destemmed, fermented in tronconic vats then matured mostly in demi-muid and a 10% portion in amphora for 14 months.

Clos Fourtet 2010 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

Cos d'Estournel 2020 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (95)

More herbal notes of blackcurrants, green tobacco, cedar, and graphite emerge from the 2018 Magari, a Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot blend brought up in French oak. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and downright seamless on the palate, this beauty is another Bordeaux look-alike with incredible class. It has some upfront appeal, with supple tannins and plenty of fruit, yet it's going to age gracefully for 15-20 years on its balance.

Awarding a highly impressive 95 points, Galloni was “so impressed with its depth and pedigree”.
