Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (95)(a blend of 58% cabernet sauvignon, 38% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot; aging in 80% new oak) Bright ruby. Pure, precise aromas of cassis, minerals, violet and fresh herbs, with an exotic note of curry that Prats says is from very ripe cabernet sauvignon. Wonderfully sweet and dense, with urgent fruit showing strong tobacco and spice notes and an almost exotic ripeness. But this has the fresh acidity to buffer its high sugars. A wine of great aromatic depth and verve, finishing with firm, thoroughly ripe tannins and superb persistence. Like so many 2002s, this is not yet showing much evidence of new oak. A potentially great vintage for this chateau. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)Saturated ruby-red. Crystallized dark berries, licorice, violet and a hint of game on the nose. Dense and thick but bright, with lively, cabernet-driven flavors of crushed dark berries, licorice, tobacco leaf, fresh herbs and earth. Offers unusually full volume for Armailhac, with lots of stuffing to buffer its firm spine of acids and sweet tannins. A superb vintage for this wine. |

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Scented and a little herbaceous. The most middle of the road, difference-splitting wine. Finishes quite dry. But there is admirable fruit on the way there. Neat. Dry. Very brisk. Next night it was more introvert, dry and a bit lean. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)Good deep ruby-red. Currant, roasted plum and oak notes of chocolate and coconut on the nose. Then bright, pure and atypically powerful, with penetrating berry and mineral flavors. This densely packed wine was still in barrel and had not yet been fined. Builds impressively on the finish, showing rather fine-grained tannins and lingering fruit and mineral nuances. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)One of the most pleasant surprises in this tasting, the 2002 Latour is just beginning to show the full breadth of its aromatic complexity, but it is also has more than enough depth to drink well for several decades. Tar, graphite, incense and smoke open up in the glass in a Latour that leans towards the more delicate, feminine side of things. Silky tannins add polish and creaminess through to the finish. The 2002 is surprisingly delicious today for a young Latour, but it also has the pedigree and density to age nicely for decades. |

Wine Advocate (95)Only 43% of the production made it into the final blend of this remarkable 2002. Produced from a low 17 hectoliters per hectare, it includes 66.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 13.9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It has the highest alcohol ever achieved in a Leoville Las Cases (13.5%) as well as a lofty pH of 3.85. Nevertheless, the impression is one of a structured wine with considerable density, a ruby/purple color, layers of flavor, and a classic overall personality. The wine exhibits pure black currant, licorice-infused fruit, huge body, a viscous mid-palate, and a long, heady finish. I suspect this wine won’t be nearly as charming as the 2003 in its youth, but it hasn’t yet closed down, and I am amazed at just how rich, intense, and full-bodied it tastes even after bottling. This is certainly one of the half dozen or so candidates for wine of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+. |

Wine Advocate (92)A classic second wine that shows outstanding potential, the dark ruby/purple-colored 2002 has notes of cedar wood, black currants, earth, and truffles in a medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, beautifully concentrated style that can be drunk now or cellared for 10-15 years. |

Jancis Robinson (18.5)Deep crimson. Firm, strongly cassis nose. Very voluptuous texture. Appetising and beautifully balanced. Obviously Médoc. Dried out a little on the end but the contrast between the flesh of this wine and skinniness of the Margaux tasted immediately beforehand could not have been more marked. It was still fresh and clean 24 hours afterwards but had lost a little density. |

Wine Advocate (94)A successful wine for the vintage, this blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot boasts complex notes of menthol, black currants, plums, licorice, and a hint of cappuccino in its stunning aromatics. Dense, medium to full-bodied, with high levels of tannin in a big, full-bodied style (much in the spirit of such classic Bordeaux vintages as 1966, 1986, and 1996), this wine possesses superb purity and serious length, but should be purchased only by those with considerable patience and a good, cold cellar, since it will need plenty of time. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. |

Jancis Robinson (18)Very rich and long and gorgeous. Spicy and long - really gorgeous. OK, a bit inky, but with such energy! It seems as though I somehow did not manage to taste this en primeur so this is my first tasting note on this impressive wine. No problem with excessive acidity here. |

Wine Spectator (93)Dense aromas of licorice, tobacco, cedar and currants. Subtle yet complex. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a rich, long finish. Very pretty. One of the best from Pauillac this year, and clearly better than 2001. One of the surprises of the vintage. Best after 2008. 20,000 cases made. |
