One of the finest Napa Valley wines to pass my lips, the 2018 Thorevilos offers an incredible level of purity, concentration, and balance. Revealing plenty of creme de cassis, white flowers, spicy oak, and tobacco-like aromas and flavors, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. Coming from a site just outside St. Helena and mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (with a good chunk of Cabernet Franc), this is pure perfection in red wine. Although it can be drunk today, it really needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years, but it's going to cruise for 30, 40, if not 50 years.

Another wine from this estate that’s going to flirt with perfection at maturity is the 2019 Thorevilos, which comes from a new vineyard located just outside of St. Helena, not far from the original site, which was renamed to Ecotone. This awesome 2019 reveals a deep purple hue as well as a smorgasbord-like array of ripe currants, crème de cassis, violets, flowery incense, and tobacco leaf. The palate is pure gold as well and is full-bodied, with a layered, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and just everything in the right place. Already complex and nuanced, this remarkably complete, heavenly 2019 will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and keep 20, 30, possibly 40 years. What an incredible example of Napa Valley and hats off to Brad Grimes. A new site but the same incredible quality.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is in the zone right now. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, mint, mocha and cedar grace the bouquet. Still vibrant and fresh, the 2014 has aged impeccably. It shows the mid-weight style of the year nicely. The 2014 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. This was only the third vintage for Bart and Daphne Araujo's Accendo, a winery that is now run by their children, Jaime and Greg.

The 2019 Malbec Finca Altamira hails from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley, and was aged for 13 months in 80% new French barrels. A rich, reddish-purple in the glass. The complex aromas feature plum with hints of country herbs, camphor and thyme accompanied by whiffs of violet and mint. The aging process adds notes of tobacco and cedar. In the mouth, it delivers a nuanced, high-pitched flavor supported by a juicy, relaxed and polished tannic structure. A characterful, energetic wine that ends with a compact but lingering fruity flourish.

Aromas of pear, orange oil, freshly baked bread, toasted almonds and white flowers introduce the NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru Le Cépage (2020 base), disgorged in January 2023. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and suave, it's fleshy and enveloping, with a ripe core of fruit, bright acids and a saline finish.

Disgorged in January 2023, the NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru Le Terroir (2020 base) is following hard on the heels of its 2019-base counterpart. A little more reserved out of the gates, it unwinds to reveal notes of pear, citrus oil, white flowers and almond paste, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pillowy and precise palate that's fine-boned, bright and mineral.

Disgorged in February 2024 with a dosage of 0.8 grams per liter and produced entirely from the 2021 vintage, Adrien Renoir’s NV Rosé d'Assemblage Les 2 Terroirs (2021) is crafted from Pinot Noir grown in clay-rich soils, 95% of which is from Verzy and vinified as Blanc de Noirs, with the addition of 5% still red wine from Verzenay. Combining tension and minerality with vibrant red fruit, it opens with notes of grapefruit, red cherries, redcurrant and spice. Medium to full-bodied, aromatic and incisive, it is a vibrant, bright expression, defined by the cool growing season, with good cut and a saline finish. This fresh style of rosé Champagne is equally at home as an apéritif or paired with a meal.

Autumnal. Golden tobacco leaf, nectarine, pine nut and thyme. A leafy, golden wine with a fine, fine mousse and white-pepper spice on the end. It's gauzy, like a cashmere scarf held to the wind. Silk and gossamer. Transparent.

Wine Advocate (94)

Renoir's 2019 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Les Montants is the only cuvée in the lineup crafted entirely from Chardonnay. The fruit for this wine comes from one of the family’s oldest parcels, part of which was planted in 1961 with massal selection. After just 40 centimeters of topsoil, the roots reach into the chalk. Disgorged in July 2023 with a dosage of one gram per liter, it reveals aromas of white flowers, green apple, fresh hazelnut and lemon zest. Full-bodied, generously structured and concentrated, it is underpinned by racy acidity and a chalky, tensile mid-palate, finishing with a long, citrus-inflected finale. The vineyard’s northwest exposure helps strike a delicate balance between generosity and freshness, especially in warm years like this.

Issuing from a parcel of massal selection Pinot Meunier planted in 1962 on limestone soil, Renoir's 2019 Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Les Vignes Goisses is the only cuvée crafted entirely from Pinot Meunier, a variety that makes up just 3% of the estate's plantings. Disgorged in November 2023 with a dosage of 0.8 grams per liter, it soars from the glass with aromas of red apple, orange zest and spices mingling with aromatic bitters. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with a charming core of fruit, chalky structuring extract and a saline finish.
