The 2018 Extra-Brut Hors Série is superb. This really bristles with tension and energy, while also offering more mid-palate presence than the 2017 tasted alongside it. White flowers, chalk, mint, slate and lemon oil stain the palate. This chiseled, beautifully sculpted Champagne has so much to offer. The eternal finish is impossible to miss. Dosage is 0.75 grams per liter.

The NV Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne (base 2023) is laced with hints of dried flowers, chamomile and spice. Open-knit and airy, with lovely mid-palate presence, the Ste.-Anne is a delight. Citrus, marzipan and chamomile build into the refined finish. In this release, the Ste.-Anne is on the more delicate side. This release is based on 2023, with reserve wines from 2022, 2020, 2019 and 2018. Dosage is 3.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 2025.

88-90 A finely-made wine, which shows softness as well as density of fruit. This will develop well, and relatively quickly.

Good deep red-ruby. Raspberry, licorice and an enticing floral quality on the nose. Lush, smooth and sweet, with lovely violet lift giving energy to the dark berry, sweet pipe tobacco and milk chocolate flavors. This broad, rather generous wine finishes with ripe tannins and very good length. (A second bottle was gamey and earthy; my projected range reflects the first sample I tried.)

Decanter (92)

Chasse Spleen continues as the modern, vibrant face of Moulis, with lovely violet edging to the colour. The oak seems higher here than in its peers, accompanied by strong aromatics of damson and vanilla bean. Some rosemary hints come in after a few minutes in the glass. It's good quality and made in the estate's signature, with the freshness helping to balance the oak flourish. Clear spicing runs through the finish.

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (93)

Medium intensity, well balanced, with attractive dark brambled fruits, with crayon, sweet baking spices and supple tannins, reflects the heat of the vintage but stays within the lines. 40% new oak barrels, and this vintage contains part of the vines from newly-purchased Château Brillette, with good quality Cabernet Sauvignon from gravel terroir.

This is structured and a little tight, with good concentration and volume. It’s medium-bodied with juicy and vibrant fruit coming through. Velvety tannins. Firm and fresh at the end.
