Vinous (90+)

Full medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, mint, wild herbs and menthol, plus a strong note of licorice pastille. Tightly wound and backward; comes across as drier than the Gevrey cuvées. Very pure and high-pitched but distinctly rigid today. Strong tannins saturate the front teeth and incisors. Tough going today and in need of patience.

Vinous (90-92)

(production was barely half of a normal crop): Bright, dark red; these 2016s all have inviting limpid colors. Slightly reduced aromas of red berries, mocha and soil. Fleshier and more concentrated than the Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes, with its sweet dark fruit and spice flavors cut by musky minerality. At once silkier and more backward than the Millandes, finishing with substantial ripe tannins. With its rocky complexity, this wine reminded me of a mini-Bonnes Mares.

Burghound (93)

(from a .30 ha parcel of 62+ year old vines that sit directly behind the cuverie). Once again there is enough wood to notice framing the bright aromas of wild red currant, newly turned earth and a similar humus nuance. There is a lovely sense tension suffusing the bigger-bodied and more muscular flavors that also flash evident minerality on the powerful, firm and very serious finish that is just a bit less austere than usual. This wine always needs extended keeping and so will the 2022 version. This is also excellent.

Vinous (92)

Good bright medium red. Complex soil-driven perfume of spicy red berries, flowers, minerals and earth. A broad, supple, slightly exotic fruit bomb in the mouth, with noteworthy intensity to its red cherry and raspberry flavors. This deceptively accessible wine finishes with a firm tannic spine.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-91)

Medium red. Wild, reduced nose of game, leather, minerals and coffee. Elegant and seamless but with a wild edge to the flavors due to the element of reduction. A bit denser than the Corbeaux, but also quite subtle and suave, with fresh, harmonious acidity. Finishes with fine tannins and very good length.

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys is layered with dark cherries, flowers, spices and menthol. This is an especially fleshy, textured Gevrey. The showy personality of the vintage comes through, but there is also plenty of underlying structure and vibrancy. I especially like the intensity of the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

Good medium red. Expressive aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoked meat. Juicy, sappy and intense, with sharply delineated if youthfully imploded flavors of red berries and spices. Boasts superb intensity and cut, and lovely acid spine, yet comes across as rather feminine in style thanks to its outstanding fruit. The sappy, highly perfumed finishing flavors spread out to saturate the palate. Serafin describes his 2010s as full bodied-wines that will need long aging. Two thousand ten is a great year for its combination of power and ageability.

Bob Campbell MW (97)

Seresin’s flagship pinot noir deserves its exalted status. It offers a seductive sweet and silken first impression revealing a structure of ripe, sappy tannins on its lingering finish. Layers of ripe fruit interspersed with subtle floral and herb characters demonstrate real complexity. Approachable now, this wine deserves at least another 4-5 years careful cellaring to reveal its true colours. 2/3/2017 Drink 2017 to 2024

Despite being more than six years old, this structured offering is still a tough nut to crack, remaining resolute and firm. While the gentle midpalate is filled with unadulterated plum, herbal and spice flavors, there is a firm tannic structure, which is emphasized by firm acidity, leaving a rather upright conclusion. This will require patience and a love of acidity. Tea leaves and festive spices linger on the long finish. Unfined and unfiltered, so expect it is to be slightly hazy in color.

The 2018 Sergant, which impressed from barrel, has a captivating bouquet of precise black cherry, wild strawberry and rose petal aromas that waft from the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannins, a silky-smooth texture and beautifully integrated oak toward the finish. This is a top-quality Lalande de Pomerol, a bit of a hidden gem.
