I’ve criticized many previous vintages of this Pomerol, but the 2019 Lagrange gives notice of improvements afoot. Now in bottle, it has a very pleasant and quite concentrated bouquet of black cherries, raspberry coulis and light truffle scents laced with blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a velvety entry and a ripe, slightly confit, spicy finish. Purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953 and located in the northern portion of Pomerol, the 2023 Château Lagrange (Pomerol) is 100% Merlot from gravelly, clay soils. Solid red and black fruits intermixed with graphite and smoky, tobacco-like nuances emerge from the bouquet, and it's concentrated and nicely built on the palate, with a firmer, denser style, ample tannins, and a great finish. The flagship from a 7-acre parcel in the estate vineyard, the 2016 Cahors Le Pigeonnier is another Pomerol look-alike with its beautiful bouquet of black cherries, blueberries, damp earth, white chocolate, and exotic spices. As with all these 2016s, it’s a ripe, powerful, opulent wine that doesn’t pull any punches, yet always stays balanced, elegant, and remarkably fresh. Made from 100% Malbec aged two years in new French oak, it builds beautifully with time in the glass, has a deep, layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. It’s possibly the finest Cahors I’ve ever tasted and would pass undetected in a blind lineup of top Napa Cabernets.
