    Wine Advocate (97+)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Harlan Estate needs a little coaxing to reveal captivating iron ore, red currant jelly, cloves and crushed rocks scents with a core of warm cassis, Black Forest cake and boysenberries plus a waft of pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy texture with a lively backbone and loads of earthy layers, long and mineral laced. This should be one of the longer-lived wines coming out of the 2017 vintage.

Stunning on every level, the 2018 Proprietary Red Wine reveals a dense purple hue as well as an incredible bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, crushed stone, iron, violets, and tobacco. Reminding me of a hypothetical blend of Ducru Beaucaillou and Pontet Canet from a great, classical vintage (or a more elegant version of the 2013 for simplicity), it's medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, powerful yet elegant, and has a finish that won't quit. (6x75cl) 2003

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)

Full medium ruby. Dusty aromas of blueberry, menthol and tobacco. Fat, lush and broad on entry, then rather youthfully unevolved in the middle palate, without quite the liqueur-like sweetness of the 2002. Notes of Havana tobacco and licorice. • Harlan The Maiden 2015 (3x75cl)
    (3x75cl) 2015

    Wine Advocate (95)

There were very small yields in this vintage—about 50% of normal production. The 2015 The Maiden (bottled in early 2018) is deep garnet-purple colored with lovely notes of warm redcurrants, black raspberries and wild blueberries with touches of rose hip tea, tobacco, spice box and fragrant earth. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated with lovely grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and earthy.

    (3x75cl) 2017

    Vinous (93)

The 2017 The Maiden is a deep, super-expressive wine. I am quite surprised by how rich the 2017 is, given a year in which many wines are on the lighter side. Dark red cherry and red plum fruit is front and center. There is some nervousness in the tannin so, even though The Maiden is the second wine of Harlan Estate, it needs at least a few years in bottle. This is a terrific showing.

Fat, lush and broad on entry, then rather youthfully unevolved in the middle palate, without quite the liqueur-like sweetness of the 2002. Notes of Havana tobacco and licorice. Here the tannins are a bit less refined than those of the 2002.

    (6x75cl) 2014

    James Suckling (96)

Aromas of blackcurrants and minerals with hints of wet concrete and stones. Full body, refined yet dense tannins and a beautiful length and finesse on the finish. A polished and ethereal wine. Best Maiden I have ever tasted.

  • Harlan The Maiden 2016 (3x75cl)

The brightness and vivid fruit character here is so very impressive. Medium to full body. Firm and silky tannins. Extremely long and linear with a gorgeous finish. I can’t wait on this. Drink or hold.

The 2019 The Maiden is gorgeous. Creamy, ample and expressive, the Maiden is a terrific introduction to the year. Succulent dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, leather, menthol fill out the layers beautifully. Medium in body, with gorgeous up-front fruit and radiance
