The Comte Senard Corton-Charlemagne Blanc 2020 is a world-class, grand cru white Burgundy emanating from the illustrious vineyards of Aloxe-Corton, at the heart of Côte de Beaune. Crafted by the Comte Senard estate, renowned for their focus on bio-dynamics, this wine stands as a perfect depiction of the vineyard's age-old traditions and innovative techniques. Intricately picked by hand, this Chardonnay boasts a rich amalgam of citrus, apple and stone fruit aromas, aged on the lees in 100% new French oak barrels for a touch of complexity and finesse. A second, malolactic fermentation is conducted to bestow the wine with its opulent, buttery profile. Illicit flavours of honey, toasted nuts and minerality, with bracing acidity, lend the Comte Senard Corton-Charlemagne Blanc 2020 its exceptional balance. A splendid embodiment of the Corton-Charlemagne appellation, this wine is an undeniable testament to the grandeur of fine French viticulture.

(6x75cl) 2012Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)
Slightly high-toned aromas of orange and lemon oil, with a lightly candied quality. Then silky and dry on the palate, but with an almost exotic quality to the candied citrus fruit flavors. A bit exaggerated for me. Finishes quite persistent, with a piquant note of lemon zest.Inc. TAX€3,324.72 -
(1x75cl) 2016Vinous (91)
(just half of a normal crop made): Bright yellow. Slightly stunted aromas of stone and citrus fruits. Quite ripe in its deep yellow fruit flavors but given a distinctly penetrating quality by a surprising spine of minerality and fresh acidity. This wine actually seems riper than it did from barrel a year ago, but with no loss of energy. Finishes with a faintly phenolic edge and a lingering note of dusty stone.Inc. TAX€543.55 -
(6x75cl) 2022Vinous - Neal Martin (91)
The 2022 Meursault Bouchères 1er Cru has a slightly more obvious bouquet than the preceding Les Poruzots from Comtes Lafon: apricot and pineapple scents, pure fruit, though I would like to see more minéralité and terroir expression. The palate is ripe and generous on the entry, with more obvious tropical tones, lower acidity and a "sunny" finish. Quite seductive and thoroughly enjoyable, but it misses the intellect of the finest in this flight. Bottled under Diam 30 Origine. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. TAX€2,430.72 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)
Lively aromas of apple, lemon, minerals and vanilla bean. Creamy sweet and wonderfully intense, with tangy freshness and complicating floral notes. Finishes with explosive fruit. From 75-year-old vines, to comprise roughly half the ultimate blend: Penetrating lemon oil and charred oak aromas. Extremely rich and powerful, with the wine's strong mineral character contributing to the impression of dryness. Really gripping, tactile finish. Large-scaled but uncommonly elegant Charmes.Inc. TAX€1,896.84 -
Vinous (93-95)
(tasted from tank) Aromas of peach and vanilla. Rich, fat and classically dry, with compelling purity to the lemon, crushed stone and mineral flavors. Perfectly integrated acidity extends the palate-staining, layered finish. With a blend of 15-, 45- and 75-year-old vines in his 1.7-hectares holding in Charmes, Lafon has the flexibility each year to make one of Burgundy's top Meursault bottlings.Inc. TAX€526.13 -
Vinous (93-95)
(tasted from barrel; the wine was scheduled to be racked the week after my visit) Restrained nose hints at candied citrus peel, flowers, vanilla and smoky lees. On the palate, lovely sweetness is perfectly buffered by ripe acidity, but this is very backward and minerally wine-more Perrieres-like than most other growers' Perrieres. Taut and uncompromising, and less showy than the Genevrieres.Inc. TAX€456.68 -
Vinous (93+)
(bottled the day before my visit; aged in 40% new oak): Complex, vibrant aromas of peach, orange zest and lemon accented by white pepper. Rich, ripe, tactile and sweet, with the intense citrus and stone fruit flavors accented by peppery spices and complicated by vanilla and leesy nuances. A very good showing today, but this is still a baby.Inc. TAX€592.13 -

(one-third new oak): Pale bright yellow. Classic aromas of lemon cream, minerals and sexy lees, along with subtle oak notes of char and coconut. (on its finings): Lemon-yellow color. Ripe peach, hazelnut and vanillin oak on the classic Meursault nose. Boasts a terrific combination of refined texture and outstanding inner-palate tension, showing the flavor intensity and verve to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle. Finishes with outstanding lemon-zest cut and length. My style of Meursault, and downright electric in the context of the year.Inc. TAX€598.13 -
(1x75cl) 2014Wine Advocate (95)
Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Comtes Lafon was not firing on all cylinders from barrel but clearly this is not the case now that the wine is in bottle. It demonstrated a subtle reduction on the nose with scents of dried quince complementing the citrus fruit, walnut and smoke aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation, harmonious with notes of tangerine and orange zest, the oak nicely integrated with appreciable weight on the finish. Very fine, very sophisticated—this surpasses my expectations from barrel.Inc. TAX€882.53 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (95)
The 2015 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru is taut and linear, more reticent than the Clos de la Barre at the moment, yet it evolves in the glass and reveals a Perrières-like stoniness. The palate pivots around a silver bead of acidity with citrus peel and nectarine notes, demonstrating greater depth than its peers on the powerful finish. Superb! Tasted at the 05/15 Burgundy dinner in The Good Earth.Inc. TAX€532.13 -
(12x75cl) 2016Wine Advocate (95)
The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is superb, unfurling in the glass with aromas of crisp peaches, apples, dried white flowers, honeycomb and oatmeal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with a deep, concentrated and multidimensional core, vibrant acids and a long finish. There's plenty of tight-knit structure and dry extract here, so this should be a long-lived Charmes.Inc. TAX€5,929.37 -

The 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is also showing very well, revealing aromas of pear, crisp yellow orchard fruit, fresh peach, almond paste and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and muscular palate that's deep, concentrated and structured, with more texture and a more introverted profile than the more expressive Genevrières. This is another great bottle in the making.Inc. TAX€4,792.28 -
(12x75cl) 2019Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95)
(5-Star Wine) An attractive faint green tint to the colour. The nose shows no signs of heat or heaviness. This is magical on the palate, absolutely fills the mouth, ripe lemons on top of rich pear fruit, but nothing peachy or over-ripe. A brilliant example of Charmes, as the vineyard and the vintage are completely in harmony. Drink from 2026-2035.Inc. TAX€4,793.76 -

The 2021 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru is strict with wet pavement and green apple/pear scents on the nose, though it does open with time in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry, yet this is somehow conservative and does not really exploit the potential of this 1er Cru. Played it safe? Then again, there is a lovely creamy finish with a dash of spice that urges you back for more. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. TAX€427.73 -

The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes showed very well from barrel, and it's just as good in bottle. Wafting from the glass with notes of pear, waxy citrus rind, white flowers, freshly baked bread and honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, with an elegantly muscular profile and a long, precise finish.Inc. Perfumed aromas of hazelnut, lime and spice. Rich but racy and stylish; youthful and minerally. Rather elegantly styled wine, quite precise for the vintage. Very long on the finish. The 2018 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru has a refined bouquet with scents of pressed yellow flowers infusing the citrus fruit, touches of ocean spray emerging and lending complexity with time.
