Vinous (97)The 2009 Romanée St. Vivant has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. Sweet red cherries, roses, mint and orange peel float on the palate in this sensual, utterly beguiling wine. This is an effortless, gracious Burgundy of the highest level. The 2009 character comes through in spades, but there is something about the Romanée St. Vivant that transcends vintage. Call it the utmost in classicism. The Romanée St. Vivant can be slow out of the gate, but once it starts blossoming in bottle it is truly majestic. Readers lucky enough to find the 2009 are in for a treat. |

Wine Advocate (96)This bottle of the 2009 Brut Grand Cru Millésime was disgorged in July 2018 after 96 months on the lees, and it's already showing brilliantly, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of smoky red berries, green apple, oyster shell and English walnuts, with a faint hint of fino sherry on the upper register. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and vinous, with searing concentration, a beautifully refined mousse, brisk acids and a long, indeed seemingly endless, finish. This thrilling vintage Champagne exemplifies the intensity and power without the weight that Egly routinely achieves and testifies to his status as one of the region's very best producers. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)(half of this wine is made with whole clusters, the other half destemmed; my note is on the blend) Good ruby-red. Rich aromas of blackberry, chocolate, espresso and flinty minerality, with pepper and menthol notes from the stem influence. Then large-scaled and creamy but with solid underlying structure and noteworthy tension in spite of having the highest pH of these 2009s. More backward and medicinal than the Grands-Echezeaux. Really builds on the back end, finishing very long and rich, with powerful tannins that will require at least several years of bottle aging. Cabernet-like in its volume and structure. Incidentally, winemaker Mallard noted that the vendange entier component gives the blend its bones, while the destemmed portion provides the flesh, but I found a sample of the former component to be wonderfully full, sweet and creamy. |

Vinous (89-92)Good deep red. Very ripe but reticent aromas of black cherry, game and pepper. (The Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Issarts was too reduced to assess with confidence on this visit.) |

Vinous (91)The 2009 Syrah caresses the palate with generous blueberries, blackberries and French oak. There isn't much varietal character or nuance here, instead the wine impresses for its silky tannins and creamy, expansive finish. Today the 2009 is all about fruit. With time in the glass, some hints of varietal character come through, but this remains a relatively soft, fruit driven vintage for the Syrah. It will be interesting to see if the full range of varietal notes develops. |

Emerging from the esteemed vineyards of Saarburger Rausch, the Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese 2009 offers an indulgent taste of superior German craftsmanship. Hand-harvested with meticulous precision, this outstanding wine reverberates with the expertise of the Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken estate, revered for its dedication to viticulture since 1742. This magnificent Riesling Auslese exudes the distinct terroir of Saar Valley, a unique composition of weathered grey slate and iron-rich soil, delivering an indelible minerality in every sip. Characterised by an aromatic bouquet of ripe apricots, candied lemon peel, and subtle hints of honey, it possesses a remarkable ageing potential. Its vibrant acidity and persistent sweetness yield perfect harmony, making the Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese 2009 a cherished addition to any discerning wine collector's selection. |

The fruit is round and very beautiful, but the wine is so young I can only imagine what might develop in the coming years. Wine Advocate (96)Gaja’s 2009 Sori San Lorenzo, on the other hand, is much more typical in its expression. Layers of juicy dark cherries, menthol, spices, tar, licorice and graphite flow across the palate as this powerful, masculine wine opens up in the glass. Wine Advocate (96)The 2009 Sori Tildin is a fascinating wine. The vineyard sits just above Costa Russi, separated only by the road that leads to Alba. This is an especially imposing vintage for Sori Tildin. Over time, the wine’s signature nuances and details begin to emerge. A radiant, sensual personality rounds things out nicely. This is a great showing from Gaja. The 2009 shuts down quickly in the glass, and is likely to demand a measure of patience from readers. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95)The 2009 Gazin has a very concentrated, high-toned bouquet with Merlot firmly in the driving seat, a mixture of black and blue fruit. Vinous (95)The 2009 Ruchottes-Chambertin was 100% de-stemmed. It has a gorgeous bouquet with vivid scents of plush red cherry fruit, cassis, violets and a hint of vanilla remaining from some new oak to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with an elegant, precise opening. It is embroidered with a perfect thread of acidity and gains momentum towards the finish that feels plush and sensual (not a million miles away from the 1999 stylistically). It needs three or four more years in bottle but there is great potential here. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London. |
