Usually appreciated for the richness and toast-enriched complexity of its Vintage cuvées, Charles Heidsieck 2013 plays on totally different assets, cool refinement and silky linearity. Despite excellent ripeness of the grapes, the October harvest brought about a tight acid line and fine aromatic restraint to it. (13.2% natural alcohol): Bright medium yellow. Reticent aromas of underripe pineapple, white nectarine, crushed herbs and white pepper. Very ripe, supple and fine-grained, with the fruit and spice flavors conveying an impression of finesse. The 2013 grand crus were bottled this January, except for the Blanchots, which was bottled in September of '14 owing to the small size of the cuvée.

The 2013 Chablis Valmur bristles with energy and pure class. Here the flavors are vibrant and focused to the core, with plenty of the typical Moreau depth, but also more than enough underlying acidity and minerality to provide balance. The aromatics are just a touch reduced at this stage, but that is not surprising considering I tasted the wine from tank. The 2013 was vinified in equal parts oak and stainless steel, while the aging is taking place entirely in tank.

Mint, chamomile, honey, hazelnuts and dried fruits jump from the glass in the 2013 Chablis Vaudésir. Underlying veins of acidity give the Vaudésir its energy, tension and pure drive. This is one of the more reticent wines at Moreau this year, but it also offers plenty of promise. In 2013, the Vaudésir was fermented entirely in tank.

One of the best-run and now superstar wineries in all of Napa is Cliff Lede. Starting with their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap, a beautiful example of this AVA, the wine has a dense ruby/purple color, floral notes intermixed with crème de cassis , graphite and forest floor. It is full bodied, but with the elegance, finesse and lightness of being, despite its intensity. The wood is pushed to the background, and the wine is beautifully pure and long. Drink it over the next 20 years.

The 2013 Clinet is terrific. Dark red and blue fruits, new leather, violets, menthol and sweet spices meld together in a wine of rare distinction for the year. This is one of the more pliant, expressive 2013s readers will come across. The finish is long, silky and polished. The oak needs time to fully integrated, but I don't think that is going to be a problem. This is a terrific showing.

The 2013 finishes with notable sweetness and density for the year. There is a lot to like here. Sadly, production is down 50%. The blend is 88% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The 2013 Clos Saint-Martin cannot disguise the shortcomings of that challenging growing season on the nose, where it is short on fruit concentration and intensity, though fresh and without greenness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannins that frame the slightly dry black fruit. However, it feels somewhat hollow and short on the finish, and therefore bottles should be consumed in the near future. Tasted at a vertical of recent vintages at the château.
