Vinous (93)

This strong series continues with the 2001 Barolo Pajana. It too is a deeply-colored effort, with notes of violets, minerals and tar that appear out of the glass. The lower altititude of the vineyard gives a wine that is perhaps a touch less complex aromatically but that is quite rich, round and soft on the palate with generous amounts of very ripe black fruit, chocolate and toasted oak flavors supported by notable structure and finishing with excellent length.

A brilliant showing for Christian Moueix’s well-known Napanook Vineyard, the 2001 Dominus is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. A classic in the making, this is a flawless, seamless example of elegant, complex Napa Cabernet Sauvignon that possesses a Bordeaux-like personality. This gorgeous, sexy, opulent, dense ruby/purple-colored wine reveals sweet caramel, mocha, creme de cassis and kirsch notes intermixed with a hint of espresso roast as well as underbrush. Ripe, long and full-bodied with well-integrated tannin, acidity, alcohol and wood, this prodigious 2001 is drinkable now and over the next 25+ years given this estate’s longevity track record. A virtually perfect wine, it is one of the most complex 2001s at present.

A sleeper of the vintage, and possibly the finest Gazin I have ever tasted, the 2001 reveals the best integration of oak at this property in many years. An opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a glorious bouquet of burning embers, roasted meats, espresso, and sweet plum and blackberry fruit. Richer and deeper than it appeared from barrel, with a tremendous finish, this full-bodied, impressive effort represents a breakthrough for Gazin. There are 6,000 cases of this 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc blend. One of the more backward wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+.

Good deep red. Very sexy, soil-driven scents of plum, mocha, redcurrant, graphite and spices. Showing plenty of truffley underbrush but also superb inner-mouth energy and spice character to its plum and dark berry fruit. Rather odd aromas of pepper, herbs, asparagus and horseradish. Then full, layered and sweet in the mouth, but with an intrusive vegetal quality hiding the site character. Tannins are nicely ripe. Roumier had to use commercial yeast skins to finish a stuck fermentation. He admits that the yeasts brought a foreign flavor to the wine, and he fined and coarsely filtered it prior to bottling. Still, he believes this Amoureuses will be better for time in bottle. We shall see.

Wine Advocate (100)

This wine, which first debuted in 1990, has probably garnered more perfect scores than any other Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2001 is just entering a young adolescent stage of development, exhibiting extraordinary nuances such as sweet, loamy soil and earthy minerality intermixed with some background smoke, black currant liqueur, plum, Asian spice and new saddle leather. Full-bodied, it possesses great intensity, with stunning flavors that are viscous enough to coat the mouth, but never become heavy or overbearing. The wine has a remarkable purity, concentration and intensity that should carry it for another 30+ years. This is already very promising, and for those who own it, I would suggest a good two to three hours of decanting prior to service.

The magnificent 2001 Mount Edelstone (100% Eden Valley Shiraz) boasts a dense purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of blackberry liqueur, white flowers, and toasty, subtle wood. Underbrush, pepper, and licorice also make an appearance. Full medium red. Compellingly fresh, complex nose combines wild raspberry, minerals, smoked meat and mint. Wonderfully fine-grained and sappy, with its red berry, coffee and leather flavors conveying a distinctly youthful character. Boasts a terric spine of firm, integrated acidity and suave tannins and builds slowly and steadily on the rising finish. Great class here. Frédéric Mugnier recalled that he was quite happy with the quality of the 2001 tannins at the beginning and that he loves this vintage. The wines were always very pretty but now they show more structure, he told me. He added that he would still wait longer to drink this wine for more complexity and polish.

I loved the 2001 Cote Rotie, but it's not for the instant gratification crowd, and even at age 14, it still has a wall of acidity and tannin. Compared to the '91 by Jean-Paul, it's a serious, medium to full-bodied, concentrated and structured Cote Rotie that has lots of cassis, currants, pepper, smoked meats and game. Possessing high acidity, beautiful concentration and ample underlying structure, give bottles another 2-4 years of cellaring and enjoy through 2031.

Wine Advocate (95)

The magnificent 2001 Mount Edelstone (100% Eden Valley Shiraz) boasts a dense purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of blackberry liqueur, white flowers, and toasty, subtle wood. Underbrush, pepper, and licorice also make an appearance. With great intensity, a multilayered, opulent personality, and plenty of structure, tannin, fruit and extract, this beauty should be cellared for 2-3 years, and drunk over the following 10-15.

Vinous (95)

Wine Spectator (92)

Lovely and graceful, with a fine-toned structure. It evokes cherry and spice aromas and flavors that are both delicate and pure, with great balance and a subtle uplift from new oak. Fine aftertaste of sandalwood. Drink now through 2012. 80 cases imported. -BS

Wine Advocate (95+)

I loved the 2001 Cote Rotie, but it's not for the instant gratification crowd, and even at age 14, it still has a wall of acidity and tannin. Compared to the '91 by Jean-Paul, it's a serious, medium to full-bodied, concentrated and structured Cote Rotie that has lots of cassis, currants, pepper, smoked meats and game. Possessing high acidity, beautiful concentration and ample underlying structure, give bottles another 2-4 years of cellaring and enjoy through 2031.
