Vinous (92)
(84% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cabernet franc, 6% petit verdot and 1% merlot) Deep ruby color. Musky cherry and cassis scents are complemented by tobacco, cedar and smoky herbs; this really smells like Bordeaux. Supple red berry, cherry and dark chocolate flavors combine intensity and depth, with fine-grained tannins adding structure. A very elegant and understated wine with excellent finishing clarity and persistence.Inc. TAX€1,364.92 -
Vinous (91+)
Palish medium red. Good lift to the aromas of red fruits, smoke, cinnamon and fresh herbs. A medium-bodied wine with good smoky intensity to its flavors of redcurrant, iron and spices. There's a coolness to this wine but also an enticing lingering perfume, and the tannins are fine-grained.Inc. TAX€8,806.38 -
Vinous (92+)
Good deep red with ruby highlights. Aromas of black raspberry, violet and licorice are purer and more precise than those of the young 2007. Then sweet and concentrated in the mouth, with a tangy freshness to the pristine dark berry and spice flavors. Youthfully closed in on itself, but already showing lovely fruit. This reminded me of a finer version of the 2007 Griottes. Finishes with building tannins. Became more expressive with air, but this really calls for a decade of cellaring.Inc. TAX€7,460.77 -

The Block 6 Shiraz comes from centurion vines plated in 1896. The 2006 Block 6 Shiraz has a very deep garnet color going a little brick in the rim and an evolved, earthy / gamey nose with notes of mulberries, dried plums, kirsch and tobacco plus menthol, cinnamon stick, licorice and espresso. Rich and full yet elegantly constructed, it presents a medium level of very fine tannins, crisp acid and a long layered finish. A very fine glass now, it should continue to cellar to 2019+.Inc. TAX€576.89 -
Vinous (95)
Deep, full orange-gold. Knockout nose offers orange, apricot, cherry, raspberry, mace, nutmeg, honey and flowers. Thick, very sweet and hugely concentrated; like liquid velvet in the mouth but with outstanding energy to its palate-staining orange and apricot fruit. Utterly seamless wine with a palate-staining, lightly saline aftertaste hinting at red berries.Inc. TAX€764.98 -
Vinous (97)
Krug 2006 Vintage is bright, tense and full of energy. Lemon confit, pastry, chamomile, dried flowers and tangerine oil all race out of the glass. The breadth of the Pinot comes through on the mid-palate and finish, as the 2006 gains power and resonance with a bit of aeration. Light tropical inflections, along with hints of almond and spice, open up later, adding further shades of nuance. Although it has just been released, the 2006 is unusually open and a real pleasure to taste today. In most vintages, Krug demands cellaring, but in the 2006 readers will find a Krug Vintage that is superb, even in the early going.Inc. TAX€555.73 -

Decanter (99)
The first aromatic impression is surprisingly floral in the context of such a hot vintage, and then evolves to reveal elements of menthol, liquorice and yellow fruit. With aeration, the bouquet blossoms to reveal increasing complexity, including spicy notes. On the palate, this is a fleshy and densely textured Clos du Mesnil with a salty tang on the finish, one that stands out for its singularity, albeit in the context of a classic crystalline, tense purity. Bravo – a work of art! 100% Chardonnay, disgorged at the end of 2019. Dosage: 4g/l.Inc. TAX€1,611.73 -

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château L'Eglise-Clinet has a killer bouquet: intense black and red fruit, crushed rose petals, a touch of potters wheel and dried herbs. It possesses one of the classiest aromatics in the Pomerol appellation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, dense dark berry fruit laced with black tea, dried herbs and a touch of juniper, gently building towards a lightly spiced, dense finish with impressive substance. This is a long-term Pomerol that needs another 3-4 years in bottle. Tasted January 2016.Inc. TAX€2,528.77 -

At present, this estate is the reference point for high quality wines from Lalande de Pomerol. The basic cuvee from proprietor Hubert de Bouard and his wife Corinne, the 2006 La Fleur de Bouard is composed of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sensationally rich, with abundant quantities of blue and black fruits, spring flowers, graphite, licorice, and hints of espresso roast as well as toasty oak, it is supple enough to be drunk now, or cellared for a decade.Inc. TAX€722.92 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-92)
(70% merlot and 30% cabernet franc, from vines reportedly averaging 100 years of age) Bright red-ruby. Aromas of raspberry liqueur and minerals, lifted by a floral topnote. Chewy and a bit reduced, but with a juicy character and lovely cut to its flavors of blackberry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate. This firmly constructed, persistent wine conveys an impression of sappiness, in the style of the vintage's better examples.Inc. TAX€867.25 -

This limited-production, 100% Merlot cuvee is a beauty. Sweet, almost caramelized black cherry fruit and dark mountain berries intermixed with forest floor and a touch of subtle oak characterize this full-bodied, rich, concentrated, superb Pomerol that should hit its stride in 3-4 years and last for two decades. Unfortunately, the production is only about 1,500 cases.Inc. TAX€1,162.19 -

The 2006 Barbaresco Starderi is easily the best of these three offerings, as the wine's balance is exceptional. Aromatics, fruit and structure are all woven together in an impressive display of power and elegance. The fruit retains the house's characteristic super-ripe style, but that element is more finely tuned here than in the estate's other Barbarescos. Simply put, the 2006 is another terrific Starderi from proprietor Giorgio Rivetti and his team.Inc. TAX€1,780.38 -

The 2006 Barbaresco Vigneto Valeirano is another exuberant wine. Here, too, the aromatics literally jump out of the glass, as layers of perfumed super-ripe fruit are intermingled with a persistent vein of minerality. The powerful, focused Valeirano offers outstanding balance, but needs a few years in bottle for the tannins to melt away.Inc. TAX€1,096.38 -

The same can be said about the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve and it offers incredible cassis, toasted bread, bouquet garni and earth aromas and flavors to go with full-bodied richness, incredible concentration and a seamless, thrillingly pure texture that’s hard to believe. It’s easily the greatest wine I’ve tasted from this vintage.Inc. TAX€373.33 -

Medium red-ruby. Utterly captivating aromas of red fruits and iron complicated by an exotic white fruit note that reminded me of viognier. Suave and silky but not at all overly sweet, with a lovely subtle perfumed character in the mouth. Very complex and distinctive 100%-merlot wine in an elegant style. Finishes long and perfumed. This property, located between Le Pin and Trotanoy, was recently purchased by Catherine Pere-Verge, owner of Le Gay. The fruit was destemmed by hand, and the must went directly into barrel for fermentation, with Michel Rolland responsible for the winemaking.Inc. TAX€3,236.36 -

As so often with Lafite, it is power that marks this wine. That, and density of texture. The additional element in this vintage, and at this stage of the wine's development, is a dominant wood element. The vanilla and tannins from the wood match well with the concentrated tannins of the fruit, which is dark, dense and tight. This is a wine for long-term aging: in 15 years this will have superb richness.Inc. TAX€12,122.77 -
