Halliday Wine Companion (97)Dense red-purple; the typically rich and powerful bouquet has layers of dark berry fruit and integrated and balanced oak. What makes it unusual is the distinct hint of chocolate, which appears again on the silkily powerful palate. Here there is an array of all of the fruit flavours one could possibly expect, but once again that touch of dark Swiss chocolate adding an intriguing note. The oak balance and integration is better than any five-year-old Grange I can remember, the tannins perfectly balanced into the bargain. |

Vinous (93-96)Saturated ruby-red. Brilliant nose features kirsch, dark berries, and iron scents, with an overlay of perfumed, spicy oak. Lush, sweet and fragrant in the mouth, with a sappy freshness; clearly made from low yields. Finishes with toothcoating but suave tannins and remarkable persistence; stains the palate with spicy bitter cherry and citric skin flavor. As with the '94, clearly the best wine in the Moueix portfolio on this day. |

Wine Spectator (93)Young and tight, a touch earthy with tart currant and wild berry flavors. Takes time to unfold, but the depth and concentration become evident on the finish, where the flavors linger. Give this time; best after 2001. Wine Advocate (94)The 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon is performing even better this year than it was last. I still believe the 1995 has a slight edge, but that may be more noticeable 8-10 years from now than at present. The opaque purple-colored 1994's forward, gorgeously-scented nose offers up a smorgasbord of black fruits, along with a subtle dosage of toasty oak and minerals. Full-bodied, with a seamless, lush texture, this is a profoundly generous wine with everything going for it. The finish lasts for 35 seconds. As gorgeous as it is, this wine can be drunk young, or cellared for 20-25 years. What makes Screaming Eagle such an extraordinary wine is its remarkably sweet, lavishly rich, opulently-textured, super-extracted black currant and black cherry fruitiness. Moreover, they are admirably pure, layered, velvety, and accessible. As delicious as these wines are young, they should age for 20 or more years, because of their extraordinary equilibrium. |

Wine Advocate (90)One of the most exotic, complex, and individualistic Brunellos produced, Soldera's just released 1994 Case Basse Riserva offers intense aromatic fireworks. A dark ruby/garnet color is followed by a stunning nose of spice box, cedar, soy, cinnamon, red and black fruits, earth, and truffle scents. Few wines achieve the aromatic intensity and complexity of Soldera's Brunello di Montalcinos. In the mouth, the 1994 is medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic, with sweet ripeness, a firm tannic underpinning, and a pure, concentrated finish. Drink it over the next 15-18 years. |

Wine Advocate (85)A sweet, soft, commercially-styled wine, the 1994 offers a medium deep ruby color, a smoky, berry-scented nose, supple, fruity flavors, medium body, no hard tannin (a rarity for a 1994), and an easy to understand finish. Drink it over the next 4-8 years. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)Expressive aromas of grilled meat, black raspberry, spicy cherry, smoke and tobacco. Lovely sweetness in the mouth; fruit flavors are more red than black. This is generous for a '94, but the tannins are not as silky-smooth as those in the '95. Intriguing smoke and maple sugar flavor on the finish. |
