  • Haut-Brion 2005 (6x75cl)

    Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (100)

The stand out First Growth in my recent retasting of the 2005s, and again here it blew us all away. This was a drought year, with almost no rain from May to October, but never excessively hot, and the balance is evident. The slightly dry tannins that affected many 2005s when young were never such a problem on the warm soils at Haut-Brion, and this is generous, exceptionally nuanced and flavourful, with vivid black cherry and cassis fruits, riven through with liqourice, cocoa bean, pomegranate, sage, cocoa bean and luscious acidities. Jean-Phillip Delmas winemaker, two years into his tenure at the time after taking over from his father Jean-Bernard Delmas in 2003. 100% new oak.

This has the powerful damson-plum intensity of great cabernet sauvignon grown in the northern Médoc. The tannins are black but not aggressive, their stoniness cushioned by layers of fruit. There's also an umami character, something like woodland mushroom and the savory skin of tiny wild cherries. An elegant wine performing at the top of its terroir, this will be delicious around eight to 12 years from the vintage.

  • Hundred Acre Morgan's Way Vineyard 2005 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95+)

(15.5% alcohol): Saturated bright red-ruby. Medicinal black cherry, blackberry, cocoa powder, tobacco, menthol and minerals on the remarkably primary nose. Seriously powerful, superconcentrated wine with a tightly coiled spring and a magically light touch. The dark berry and mineral flavors are complicated by a saline element. Conveys an impression of excellent acidity, but Woodbridge notes that the pH here is around 4.0; still, this wine makes the 2004 seem truffley by comparison. Finishes with a suave dusting of tannins and outstanding length. This was made in oak fermenters at Woodbridge's new winery, then aged in his caves. I'd still give it several years in the cellar to resolve its acids and tannins. It may yet merit an even higher score.

  • Jacques Selosse Millesime 2005 (1x150cl)

    James Suckling (98)

From a duo of Avize Grand Cru parcels, this has a stunning sense of purity about it and is truly driven by terroir with gentle complexity to the élevage. The lemon, grapefruit, and yellow-nectarine fruits are prevalent and pure on both the nose and palate, while other aromas come along in the chalky, lightly spicy zone. The palate has flawless build and drive and the acidity is assertive but wrapped in concentrated citrus flavors and underpinned with fine, smooth phenolics. Fruit flavors run super deep into the finish, which is wrapped in a smooth build of warm, toasted hazelnuts and super-pure chalky notes. This is brilliant now, but age it through to 2025 to enhance the savory richer side of this superb Champagne.

  • Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale 2005 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (96-98)

The youngest of the vines informing Mugnier's 2005 Musigny just reached forty. This explodes from the glass with aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, red currant, marzipan, diverse bitter-sweet florals and citrus zest. In the mouth, there is a palpable sense of sheer density yet weightlessness (once again putting me in mind of a great, red Riesling!) Almost implosively fresh fruit concentration is layered with tactile notes of citrus zest and chalky minerality, veal-stock richness, pungent spices, and an armload of flowers. (The 2004, incidentally, is effusive and juicy in personality, with superb penetration and refined length.)

  • Jean Grivot Richebourg Grand Cru 2005 (6x150cl)

    Burghound (97)

There is the first whiff of secondary character to the gorgeously complex red, black and violet-infused aromas that are trimmed with a dazzling array of spice and sandalwood hints. The round, intense and overtly muscular broad-shouldered flavors possess real power and superb intensity that slowly builds from the mid-palate to the explosively persistent and robust finish. I really like the purity of expression here on the linear and stony backend that has a dusty quality from all of the dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the still notably firm tannic spine. This is a big wine but it remains impeccably well-balanced and it should live for decades, indeed it is still very much in need of more cellar time.

  • Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2005 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

Saturated, dark red-ruby color. Soil-driven aromas of dark cherry, mocha, cocoa powder and pungent minerality. Like liquid silk in the mouth, with great finesse and perfume to its ineffable raspberry and mineral flavors. Wonderfully concentrated, classy wine with an utterly seamless texture. This saturates every millimeter of the mouth. The suave, perfumed finishing flavors go on and on yet remain virtually weightless. A great wine: Meunier considers it the best he has made since 1993.

  • Jonata El Desafio de Jonata 2005 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

(93% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 2% petit verdot) Opaque ruby. Pungent cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by exotic floral and Indian spice qualities. Bitter cherry and dark chocolate flavors gain sweetness with air, fleshing out and carrying through a long, sappy finish. Manages to be lush and sweet but also poised, offering an impressive balancing act of tannins and ripeness. This has excellent hang time. This, too, is much more impressive than the maiden 2004 release.

  • Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvee de Tres VV 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97-98)

From vines said to have been planted in the 1880s, the Roty 2005 Charmes Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes announces its distinction a foot away from the glass, with uncanny intensity and clarity of black fruit essences, along with ineffable mineral and animal suggestions. Tactile cinnamon spiciness, bitter-sweet herbs, and black cherry and black raspberry concentrate (fresh, yet with liqueur-like intensity, sweetness and viscosity) saturate the palate, and a dark and rising tide of mineral and carnal flavors meets the fruit and spice in a thunderous finish. There is mystery aplenty here, with the sex appeal well beneath the surface.
