    Decanter (97)

Grattamacco is one of the highest estates in Bolgheri, located just beneath the village of Castagneto Carducci. It has a distinctive contribution of 15% Sangiovese to the blend, along with the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This indigenous grape gives the wine a particular freshness and drinkability, rejuvenating the tension of the classic Bordeaux varieties. In 2016, Grattamacco has exceeded itself, with aromas of elegant, youthful red currant fruits integrated with citrus notes and cedar wood. On the palate the wine is perfectly balanced, and more immediately drinkable than some of the other top samples. Wine Advocate (93)

The Le Macchiole 2020 Bolgheri Rosso is 50% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a powerhouse wine that has become a steady little engine for the estate economy, growing from a production of 36,000 bottles to 140,000 bottles made annually today. This vintage does a terrific balancing act with dark fruit and concentration on the one hand and an accessible easy-drinking personality on the other. Black fruit cedes to baked brioche, spice and toasted aniseed. The wine finishes for 10 months in a combination of second, third and fourth-year barrique, and about 30% of the total goes into cement. The finish is polished and fresh, and you get good value.

Fine-grained, pure and penetrating on the palate, with outstanding density and great energy to the flavors of red berries, aromatic herbs and white pepper. Fine, silky tannins provide the backdrop for the 2010 Paleo Rosso, a wine that captivates for its exquisite, graceful personality. Sweet, perfumed aromatics jump from the glass, followed by dark notes of red and black stone fruit, melted road tar, spices and espresso, all woven together in a fabric of pure class. The 2010 boasts stunning depth and volume, but is never heavy. All the elements are simply in the right place, but readers will need to give the tannins a few years to soften a bit further.
  • Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97+)

The Three Graces of Le Macchiole are Messorio, Scrio and Paleo (Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, respectively). Of these three top-tier releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. This is an upright and direct expression of the grape that carefully sheds some dusty or mineral aromas before opening the way for determined black fruit, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. There is quite a bit of oak, but it works beautifully against the natural intensity and rich concentration of the hot vintage. More unexpected are those pretty tones of lilac, blue flower and aniseed that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart.

  • Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2019 (6x75cl)

    The Wine Independent (98)

The 2019 Le Macchiole Paleo included for the first time grapes from the Ulivino vineyard. This 2.7 ha vineyard, on the northern border of Bolgheri was planted in 2015. At 70 meters above sea level it is really a little hill, surrounded by forest and facing the sea. The Cabernet Franc is planted on an east/west exposure and Le Macchiole feel these grapes will add more power and freshness to the wine. It starts off with youthful, creamy, exotic spice and incense-like notes of oak, but underneath there is a lovely, leafy, raspberry note that is very distinctively Cabernet Franc. There is a beautiful, precise quality to the fruit, with dark berries, licorice, quinine notes and a very long finish. Like the 2016, this 2019 feels quite classical in style but it feels even more refined with firm but fine tannins.

Not a shy wine by any means, the 2017 possesses tons of intensity and volume in all of its dimensions. This is an especially heady wine, even by Bolgheri standards, and that is saying a lot! And yet all the elements are so well balanced.

  • Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

Le Macchiole’s 2018 Bolgheri Rosso will give readers a very good idea of the vintage in Bolgheri. Fresh, fruity and impeccable in its balance, the 2018 is a model of understatement. What it lacks in classic Bolgheri opulence, it more than makes up for with its gracious personality and overall appeal.

  • Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Le Macchiole's 2019 Bolgheri Rosso is bright, effusive and so alluring. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of red/purplish berry fruit as this silky, mid-weight red shows off its undeniable charm. The interplay of Bolgheri radiance with the approach at Le Macchiole today, that seeks greater energy in the wines than in the past, is so incredibly appealing.

  • Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2020 (6x75cl)

  • Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2008 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (95+)

(100% cabernet franc): Good full ruby-red. Knockout, extremely fragrantnose combines raspberry, strawberry, Oriental spices, bay leaf, violet and white pepper. Fine-grained, pure and penetrating on the palate, with outstanding density and great energy to the flavors of red berries, aromatic herbs and white pepper. The extremely long, perfumed,palate-staining finish features supple tannins that are in perfect harmony with the wine's fruit. Another great Paleo in the making: I love this wine's vibrant delivery of pure, unadulterated cabernet franc aromas and flavors. A great showing.

  • Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2010 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

    Wine Enthusiast (98)

A riot of pepper lights up the nose, from cracked black to green peppercorn to hot chili. Flint and leather undertones empower the heat, while aromas of raspberry jam and vanilla provide balance. The palate stays spicy, with snappy, confident acidity, but a sweetness lingers, and a finish of chili and chocolate ties everything together. Transcendent. Drink 2030–2040 or beyond.

Appreciate the aromas of crushed stones and currants that follow through to a full body, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Lots of dark-berry and walnut character in the aftertaste. Beautiful second wine of Ornellaia. Already very attractive, but better after 2022.
