  • Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2014 Barolo Ravera is just as impressive as it has been in the past. Sweet floral notes and layers of fruit are beautifully laced together. Over time, the 2014 has started to gain weight, but it is also starting to shut down in terms of its overall expressiveness. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon.

  • Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97+)

Of the many great contributions made by the winemaking team at Elvio Cogno, perhaps the greatest is the importance they brought to the Ravera cru of Novello. Little-known before their efforts, this vineyard has risen in high regard in recent years and continues to show impressive potential. The 2016 Barolo Ravera offers an important education in why this site deserves the spotlight. The wine shows terrific balance and depth, with rich fruit aromas framed by smoke, tar, ferrous earth and tangy licorice. The tannins are softly contoured, and the wine moves over the palate with profound length. Interestingly, two Nebbiolo clones, Lampia and Michet, are blended to make this wine. Some 15,000 bottles are hitting the market now.

  • Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2001 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2001 is a sultry and flirtatious vintage of Pepe’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne. Dark and a bit murky at first, it takes nearly an hour to blow off a musky, almost wooly mineral and animal-toned air; however, beneath it all, there are depths of tobacco, cherry sauce, scorched earth and a mentholated, herbal freshness that adds a wonderful lift. This soft, nearly-fleshy wine finds a lovely harmony through a mix of nervous acidity and citrus-tinged red fruits that add a highly energetic and almost-juicy feel. Blood orange nuances and a burst of inner sweetness mix with an inner sensation of wet autumn leaves (I know, I know, but it’s Pepe), as the 2001 finishes completely resolved, long and with a hint of balsamic spice that lingers on and on. While it takes a little work to unlock the 2001’s charms, good luck not devouring the entire bottle once it’s opened.

  • Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2010 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2010 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne is a total showstopper with its deep, dark, purple, red color. The intense bouquet blends fresh plums with black raspberries, sweet peppery curry, tobacco, leather and balsamic spice. It flows across the palate in silken waves, communicating elegance at the start. Within moments, a tart burst of cranberry and sour cherries combines with nervous acidity to create a juicy impression with riveting tension. The 2010 is rich and potent; it leaves a staining of concentration while remaining incredibly fresh. The balanced bite of tannin that remains creates a classically dry finale. A minute goes by, and dried citrus rinds, hints of coffee grinds and black licorice are still present. This is easily the most moving experience that I’ve ever had with an Emidio Pepe Montepulciano. The 2010 is in a gorgeous place today and has a very bright future.

  • Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2012 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

Bright red-ruby. Initially a bit funky and gamey on the nose, then clears up with aeration to offer aromas of dark berries, menthol and a hint of tobacco. Soft and plush but not at all overripe, with sweet dark berry and cocoa flavors offering considerable immediate appeal. Finishes with building tannins and good length. Fruitier and more forward than usual for a young wine from Emidio Pepe (in my experience, these reds improve spectacularly with bottle age, showing their best at 8 to 10 years from the vintage) and atypically dominated by black rather than red fruit notes, this also strikes me as less deep than most other past great vintages of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from this estate.

    Wine Advocate (91-94)

I tasted three components of the 2020 Crozes Hermitage Les Trois Chênes—maybe four, as Darnaud hadn't yet decided on whether the last one would be included in this cuvée or bottled separately as Au Fil du Temps. The blend should reflect a balanced blend of floral, stemmy notes, bright red cherries and notes of dark-skinned fruit and black olives. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, it should drink well on release and for up to a decade. The final sample, aged in second use François Frères barrels, stood out for its suave, silky texture, smoky notes, vibrant raspberry fruit and long finish. If Darnaud bottles it separately, don't hesitate to snap it up.

Medium red brick-colored, the 2018 Barolo Docg Ravera Riserva Vigna Elena offers a sweet floral perfume of rose petals, potpourri, candied raspberries, sweet sage, and fresh rosemary. Medium-bodied, it has mouthwatering freshness and a more linear and focused feel, with highly refined tannins, mouthwatering acidity, a saline mineral undertone that floats through the palate, and a long finish. It’s only going to improve with time and will be best enjoyed 2027-2050.

Given the price of some Chilean icons these days, Coyam remains one of the best value reds in the country, right up there with the country's top red blends. Based on Syrah and Carmenère with the remaining 19% made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, Malbec, Carignan, Tempranillo and Mourvèdre, this is wonderfully detailed and complex. Racy and mineral, with scented oak, mint, wild herb and sweet spice undertones and a core of inky damson and black cherry fruit. 2022-30

  • Emmanuel Darnaud Crozes-Hermitage Les Trois Chenes 2020 (12x75cl)
