Carlo Ferrini's signature touch adds an extra layer of dark fruit concentration and sweet spice. Indeed, the wine ages in 500- and 700-liter barrels for 18 months. Fruit comes from a 1.9-hectare site with 50- to 80-year-old plants at 560 to 850 meters in elevation on the north side of Etna. The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine du Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot) has a dense, fruit-driven bouquet that does not possess the detail of Rousseau's Chambertin 2012. Wild strawberry mingles with cranberry and dried orange peel notes that gain intensity in the glass, but not quite the precision. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, citrus fresh in the mouth with touches of blood orange. Perhaps the true quality of this wine is unveiled because it is far superior than the recalcitrant nose. There is a touch of bitterness on the finish, but that merely lends this Chambertin tension. The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru was picked on September 7 and made with 50% whole bunch and 40% new oak. It has a very pure, generous bouquet with layers of red cherries, crushed strawberry and cranberry fruit and well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. This is really quite refined for the appellation as the mid-palate is pure silk which disguises somewhat the underlying muscularity of the big-bodied flavors that are blessed with both excellent concentration as well as plenty of palate coating dry extract.
